PLYMOUTH, ME — A woman died and two men were hurt Wednesday evening after a two-vehicle crash in Plymouth sent both vehicles into Plymouth Pond, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the wreck happened at about 6:39 p.m. on Moosehead Trail Highway, also known as Route 7, near the intersection with Loud Road. Emergency crews pulled all three people from the vehicles and took them to the hospital.
The sheriff’s office said the crash remains under investigation.
Deputies say eastbound sedan was struck by pickup on Route 7
Investigators said a small sedan was traveling east when an oncoming pickup truck hit it. After the impact, both vehicles ended up in the pond.
The crash location put responders on Moosehead Trail Highway near Loud Road, a stretch also identified as Route 7. The sheriff’s office has not said exactly how the collision unfolded beyond the vehicles meeting head-on in the roadway.
Late Wednesday, officials had not released a cause for the crash.
Hospital crews treated three people pulled from the water
First responders were able to get the people out of both vehicles, including the two occupants of the sedan and the lone driver of the truck. All three were taken to a hospital after the rescue.
Officials said the sedan’s driver, a 67-year-old man, was being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver, a 69-year-old man, was also listed with non-life-threatening injuries.
The woman riding in the sedan, 68, died at the hospital.
Authorities have not released the names of those involved
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office did not identify any of the three people involved in the collision. That leaves public details limited to their ages, injury status and the role each person was believed to have been playing in the vehicles.
For now, investigators are working with the basic timeline: a Wednesday evening crash, a sedan heading east, and a pickup coming the opposite direction before both vehicles went into Plymouth Pond.
No additional details about the drivers or passengers have been released.
Moosehead Trail Highway crash adds to local concerns about dangerous roadway wrecks
The scene near Loud Road was cleared after emergency crews finished rescuing the people trapped in the vehicles, but the sheriff’s office said the investigation was still active late Wednesday.
Crashes that send vehicles off the road and into water often require quick rescue work, and this one ended with hospital treatment for all three people involved. The outcome was especially severe for the woman in the sedan, who did not survive.
Officials have not said whether weather, speed or road conditions played a role.
