82-Year-Old Pilot Suffers Minor Injuries After 1939 Kinner Sport-Wing Flips on Landing at Brunswick Executive Airport During Maine Stopover

BRUNSWICK, ME — An 82-year-old pilot was treated for minor injuries after his antique plane crashed Thursday at Brunswick Executive Airport, according to Brunswick police. The single-engine aircraft flipped over as it touched down on the runway at about 12:34 p.m.

Police identified the plane as a 1939 Kinner Sport-Wing. The pilot was the only person aboard, and officials said his injuries were not serious.

The crash happened during a stop in Brunswick as the plane made its way from Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Owls Head.

Antique plane overturned as it touched down on the runway

Brunswick police said the Kinner Sport-Wing turned over when it contacted the runway, a dramatic end to a routine landing sequence at the airport. The airplane came to rest upside down after the touchdown.

The aircraft’s age makes it unusual even among small-plane incidents. Built in 1939, the Sport-Wing is a vintage model that draws interest from aviation enthusiasts, but the landing ended in a crash rather than a showpiece arrival.

Officials have not said whether weather, runway conditions, or a mechanical problem played a role in the accident.

Pilot from New Hampshire was the only person on board

Police said the pilot was from Windham, New Hampshire, and no passengers were aboard. That means emergency responders were dealing with a one-person aircraft accident rather than a larger evacuation or mass-casualty situation.

The pilot was treated for minor injuries after the crash. No additional medical details were released, and authorities have not said whether he was taken to a hospital or released after treatment.

Because he was the only occupant, investigators will be able to focus closely on the aircraft, the landing sequence, and conditions on the runway.

The flight was headed toward Owls Head after leaving Massachusetts

Brunswick police said the plane had departed from Lawrence, Massachusetts, and was stopping in Brunswick before continuing on to Owls Head. That makes the airport part of a multi-leg trip rather than the flight’s final destination.

Owls Head is a common coastal Maine destination for general aviation traffic, and Brunswick Executive Airport often serves as a refueling or stopping point for smaller aircraft traveling through the region.

The brief stop ended abruptly when the aircraft overturned on landing, leaving the pilot hurt and the plane damaged on the runway.

FAA investigation will examine what caused the crash

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash, police said. That review will typically look at the aircraft, the landing conditions, and any other factors that may have contributed to the accident.

At this stage, Brunswick police have not released a cause. The information made public so far confirms only the time, location, aircraft type, injuries, and the flight’s path through Maine.

For now, the incident remains an active aviation investigation, with the FAA expected to sort out what caused the 1939 plane to flip on touchdown.

Brunswick airport crash adds to concerns around small-aircraft landings

Small-plane incidents can draw quick attention because even a low-speed landing problem can turn serious when an aircraft flips or leaves the runway. In this case, the outcome was less severe than it could have been, with only minor injuries reported.

The crash also underscores the challenges of operating vintage aircraft, which require careful handling and maintenance even on short regional hops. While police did not cite a specific failure, the investigation will likely help determine whether the landing itself, the plane’s condition, or another factor set off the accident.

For now, Brunswick officials say the plane crashed after touching down, and the pilot survived with only minor harm.
