Junior Mackenzie Derry values the sport of cheerleading and the four sections that come with it: stunting, tumbling, cheer and spiriting.

Derry’s position is base, so she controls the stunts and is directly under the flyers. Derry has been doing cheer for four seasons–a year total–and Coach Sisselman describes the positive impact she has made on the team.

“She is a great asset. Her leadership and communication skills definitely help the team thrive. Mackenzie is definitely someone we can all count on day in and day out,” says Sisselman.

As the winter season begins, one goal Derry has is to place in the top three at counties and learn more stunts. Derry and her teammates will cheer at winter games while preparing for competitions.

“Before we go on the mat at counties and regionals we write ‘hit’ on the bottom of our shoes to bring good luck that we will hit everything and also not stepping on the Dulaney crest,” says Derry.

When it comes to cheerleading, having a strong relationship with your teammates is very important–it correlates back to the stunts and routines. Derry explains she has this bond on and off the court with her teammates.

“As a team, we went to cheer camp during the summer and just sharing rooms and talking a lot just brought everyone closer as a team,” says Derry.

Besides cheer, Derry loves to hang out with friends, play video games and enjoy her favorite competition day meal–pizza. Derry also enjoys attending the school theater productions.

“I went to the theater to see footloose. It was a very good play and I loved all the actors,” says Derry.

Derry is looking forward to continuing to cheer at Dulaney High School (DHS) for the next two years, and is excited for  the outcome of this season.
