Athlete to watch: Captain Colegrove attacks the crease

The Dulaney lacrosse season is underway with returning talent across the men’s team. One lacrosse captain in particular, senior attackman Braeden Colegrove, stands out this season, establishing himself as a key player in helping lead the Lions to victory.

Colegrove began playing lacrosse at a very young age as the sport was essentially “handed down to him” since all of his siblings played.

“I was constantly surrounded by lacrosse, whether that meant going to summer tournaments, watching school games or just playing catch with my family,” said Colegrove.

Colegrove is a four-year varsity player and a valuable asset to the team, scoring multiple goals each game. During a game versus Sparrows Point this season, he scored 3 goals and had 2 assists.

“Braeden exemplifies being a Dulaney Lacrosse player through his toughness, perseverance and work ethic. He consistently puts the team first and is always working to make those around him better,” said Coach Fiat, head coach of the men’s lacrosse team.

As a captain, Colegrove takes on the responsibilities of planning and acting on the team’s goals, being a reliable teammate, creating new traditions and being a voice for the team.

“Braeden has inspired our team through his stick skills and athleticism. You want the ball in his stick at the end of a close game,” said Ryan Grogan, Colegrove’s teammate.

Colegrove’s favorite part about lacrosse is the relationships he has built playing on a team with some of his closest friends. Colegrove believes those relationships have helped the team become a family.

“Some of these guys, like Chris Esslinger and Drew Dannenfelser, I’ve been playing with since 3rd or 4th grade,” said Colegrove.

Along with having some of his best friends on the team, Colegrove’s brother is one of his coaches for Dulaney. Colegrove appreciates having his brother on the sideline because he is able to tell him what he needs to hear and Colegrove always has someone to confide in.

In the fall, Colegrove plans to continue his athletic career at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. In the meantime, Colegrove will no doubt continue to lead the mens varsity team to success and remain a role model for many of his teammates.
