Reminding students what feminism is about

There is a current trend of belittling and hatred within the modern feminist movement. It is important to reiterate the true feminist values to bring attention to them.

Feminism is about women wanting to be treated equally and provided with the same opportunities as men. It is about fighting for the end of the gender wage gap and not being judged for putting a career before children. Regardless of whether you’re a social, liberal or radical feminist, the majority of feminists strive to achieve four main goals: working to increase equality across genders, expanding human choice, eliminating gender stratification and ending sexual violence.

Lately, people online and in person have lost sight of what feminism is. Feminism has turned into being “anti-man” and woman vs. woman. But tarnishing each other will only dissipate our goals.

When a woman posts a TikTok video of making lunch for her husband, some other women attack her in the comments. They criticize her for going against feminist principles and undoing the progress that feminists have made in expanding human choice. However, this is not true. Feminism is about giving women the freedom to choose what they want to do, not forcing them to work. If a woman decides to stay at home and care for her family or finds joy in doing domestic work, it is her choice. This doesn’t make her less of a feminist or a disgrace to other women. Feminism is not a competition between genders, and it’s not about who suffers more. It’s about working together to achieve gender equality. Comparing the struggles of men and women leads to resentment and goes against the principle of increasing equality. Instead, we should acknowledge each other’s struggles and work together to alleviate them. If we stop discrediting each other, we can accomplish much more.

Although feminism has made significant progress since its inception, there’s still a long way to go.
