Every year Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) invites students of all grade levels to participate in a haiku writing contest. Winners for this year’s contest will be announced on April 17.

Submitted haikus must be inspired by one of 10 preselected art pieces from Baltimore County students, which can be found on the BCPS website. All entries must follow the three-line haiku poetry format: the first and third lines contain five syllables and the second contains seven.

One of the art pieces featured in the contest is created by Dulaney High School junior Aveson Smith.

Each contest winner for their age group will win a scholarship to attend the Maryland asynchronous summer writers camp. In addition to the winning submissions, various haikus will be selected to be put in the newest edition of the BCPS haiku contest book.

To view the art pieces, visit the BCPS website: https://www.bcps.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=2828&pageId=71042010
