Dulaney High School (DHS) is focusing on giving this holiday season. Maryann Cavolo, Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) officer, and social worker Brandi Parenti, organized a holiday gift drive for families in need.

Cavolo highlights the importance of this event.

“We are looking to support members within our own community…We want to be able to share some blessings with others who don’t have as much,” says Cavolo.

The drive began at the end of November and all final donations were collected on Dec. 18. Families who were interested in donating completed an online sign-up on the PTSA website with direct requests from the families in need.

“It is whatever the family is requesting. We give them a sheet with clothing sizes and a wish list…then there is a need list, so that we can prioritize what people would really need and help more families,” says Parenti.

This year a total of 12 DHS families were supported. Cavolo adds the number of family members varied, “some with as few as one or two people, some as many as eight or ten.”

DHS has hosted the drive for more than ten years and delivered thousands of Christmas gifts. The most popular requested item this year was gift cards.

“People seem to like a lot of gift cards, which makes sense…especially at this age, there is at least one teenager in the house,” says Parenti.

All families received the donations on Dec. 21.
