The attainability of New Year’s resolutions

As the new year begins, many Dulaney High School (DHS) students created New Year’s resolutions for success and happiness in 2024. Students give advice on creating and keeping realistic resolutions.

Senior Ava Barnes describes her technique for creating resolutions.

“This year I’m trying to have more discipline in myself, doing the things that I don’t want to do so they get done…I haven’t really done any [resolutions] in the past but all my so-called goals were forgotten at the beginning of the year,” said Barnes.

The key is setting one to two resolutions to hold yourself accountable. Creating multiple unrealistic resolutions can be overwhelming. Senior Kayla Frederick created two specific resolutions this year and a way to hold herself accountable.

“My resolutions are to drink more water and journal daily; I write down my goal and check it off daily,” said Frederick.

Creating resolutions varies from person to person. Junior Khizar Qazi created 366 resolutions for 2024. While this may seem drastic compared to most other students, his approach is distinct.

“I feel like they are guidelines to follow throughout the year and a list of things to look back on as the year progresses. Some of these goals are out of my control, but I hope to change my habits to reach these goals,” said Qazi.

Qazi also reads back his resolutions and crosses out the “I want to” phrases and changes them to “I will.” His approach will help him reflect on the goals he has made throughout the year.
