Students select the “perfect” local study spot by taking into consideration a location’s unique features, the ability to socialize, and whether locations provide free Wi-Fi. It’s important to try different environments to find which one best fits one’s studying style.

Baltimore County Public Library

One option is the Baltimore County Public Library. Its Cockeysville and Towson branches are the closest to the Dulaney zone. Both locations are open five days a week and have meeting rooms, study rooms and a quiet area open to the public on a first come first serve basis.

Seniors Deepika Pun and Gabby Lieu enjoy going to the library together, using the whiteboards in the library’s study rooms and taking study breaks at the gaming area.

“The gaming place is right next to the teen’s novel section and they have PS4, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. You just have to ask one of the librarians if you want to play one of the games,” says Pun.

“This is the first library I’ve ever been to and when I walked in everybody was very nice and it was quiet,” says Lieu.

Starbucks

Starbucks is a study spot that embodies the café culture by providing an escape to work quietly, socialize and enjoy a quick bite all in one. Juniors Maria Bellios and Abby Kay are loyal to the shop located on Tullamore Rd in Timonium. The location’s fast Wi-Fi plays a big factor in why they show a preference for the location.

“We go together because we usually have work for the same class or we’re trying to get the same thing done,” expresses Abby Kays.

“A lot of other people are working, which motivates me to work in a way,” says Bellios.

Panera

The last location, Panera, contains nearby locations in Hunt Valley, Timonium, Towson, making it an accessible location for many.

“Panera is a go-to spot if you study best while eating and or drinking something. I’m also able to talk with my friends without worrying about being too loud. It’s not a very tiring or quiet environment like the library but it still motivates you to study since they have study areas where you can charge your device and do homework,” says Senior Sheila Kinyanjui.
