Dulaney High School’s (DHS) Junior Classical League (JCL) engages in diverse activities to promote the Latin program and celebrate the language.

JCL is a national organization for all Latin, Greek and classical students to celebrate classical literature, culture and language. The club has a storied history at DHS and was once a popular club.

“We have a rich history. So this was an incredibly robust club before [the] pandemic,” Dawn Mitchell, DHS’s Latin teacher and club advisor, said.

Current DHS Latin students revived the club this year. Now led by co-presidents, juniors AV Smith and Chris Williams, JCL meets quarterly for focused activities.

“It’s a lot about Roman and Greek culture,” Smith said.

These activities were described as being modern activities with a twist.

“So we had a pumpkin painting activity where they [JCL members and attendees] paint like mythical monsters [on them],” Williams said.

The club is also preparing for the annual JCL district convention in Pennsylvania. In April, JCL members will submit art and costumes for competitions and compete in other games to celebrate Latin with other JCL chapters around Maryland. The convention includes a multitude of events, such as chariot races, food and costume contests.

JCL meetings are open to all current DHS Latin students. Students not enrolled in Latin may attend events upon invitation from current Latin students.

“Latin Club is very diverse, and there’s so many levels of Latin here,” Smith said. “It’s very fun.”

JCL’s next event is Recycled Rome, where will members use recyclables to construct a model of Rome in the hallway.
