AI brings back The Beatles

With the help of artificial intelligence (AI) The Beatles released their final song, “Now and Then,” on Nov. 2. What makes the song special is that it features all four band members — Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr — including those no longer alive. Dulaney students share their appreciation for this new release.

Initially written by Lennon in the 1970s, “Now And Then” is a four-minute-long piece that falls into the indie and alternative music genres. Indicative of The Beatles’ tendencies to produce music in a wide range of genres, the song reached numerous audiences, including students at Dulaney High School.

“I love it; it’s absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of the fall season,” says junior Sarah Harriman. With Lennon’s assassination in 1980 and Harrison’s death in 2001, the creation of “Now And Then” appeared impossible until the recent rise of AI. Rather than recreating Lennon’s vocals from the original demo, AI was used as a sound-separation technology to extract the late musician’s real voice, resulting in an incredibly raw dand authentic result. McCartney produced the song featuring Harrison’s guitar from the 1995 Anthology sessions, Starr’s singing and drumming from 2022 and Lennon’s vocals and piano.

“Now And Then” is considered The Beatles’ final song, serving as closure for long-time fans.
