Junior Andrew Cao, class of 2025 vice president, shares how he changed his high school life from disengagement to leadership and belonging.

Whether he’s seen on campaign flyers, engaging with his classmates or scoring touchdowns on the varsity football team, junior Andrew Cao is thriving at Dulaney High School (DHS). Taking on six Advanced Placement (AP) courses and leading the DHS Student Council as his class’ vice president, Cao is making a significant impact this school year.

During his freshman year, Cao stepped out of his comfort zone and into the gym, where he could become a more extroverted and appreciative version of himself.

“After going into the video game path and using that to receive dopamine, I feel like going to the gym just made me feel something different…It got me out of my COVID-shell,” said Cao.

Cao chose to run for vice president at the end of his sophomore year in an attempt to unite the DHS community and create a more prevalent student council. He has been seen engaging with students during lunches by asking them directly how they feel about school events and important topics. Cao also has made various advertisement videos, trending amongst the DHS community on various social media platforms.

“I’ve made videos to reach out to our whole grade with a sense of humor and to inform students about what’s coming up,” said Cao.

After graduation, Cao is interested in joining the military and applying to the United States Military Academy, the United States Air Force Academy and the United States Naval Academy. He feels that he has been led there by his determination to lead and stay active.

“What I’m here to do is take people out of their comfort zone and do things that have never been done before,” said Cao.

Cao looks forward to his future decisions and continuing his leadership role in the Dulaney community.
