A student-organized Diwali Festival, coordinated by Asian Youth Against Hate (AYAH), will take place Sunday, Nov. 19 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Meadowood Regional Park.

The Diwali Festival of Lights is a five-day Hindu festival celebrated every year in November, though other religious communities, including Jains and Sikhs, commemorate the holiday as well. Diwali symbolizes good over evil and celebrates the return of Prince Rama of Ayodhya and his family from 14 years of exile and war.

Junior Aanya Kheterpal, AYAH President, says, “In my family, we usually go to the temple and spend time with family and friends, eating lots of good food and doing fireworks until the end of the night.”

AYAH’s Diwali Festival will include diya painting (small clay lamps), rangoli designs (sand art), sparklers, musical performances, and more.
