The heroes of the lunchroom

Sara Leber, Staff Writer

As the giving season approaches, showing appreciation to the Dulaney High School staff is necessary. Everyday, during all four lunch shifts, there are numerous food options provided for students. The work our cafeteria staff does everyday to make sure we all have food in our stomachs goes unnoticed. It’s time we give the cafeteria workers the attention they deserve.

The manager of the Office of Food and Nutrition at Dulaney described the daily tasks of the lunch ladies. Not only do the lunch ladies serve lunch, but they also serve breakfast in the morning. Some of the breakfast meals include mini waffles, fresh fruits, french toast sticks and banana muffins. These are all served before the school day, which starts at 7:45 a.m. After serving breakfast, they cut up fruits, vegetables, make sandwiches, bag food and cook for lunch. After lunch, their job is still not complete as they have to prepare food for the next day. They are always a day ahead, another reason why they are so exceptional.

One thing that can be challenging for the cafeteria workers is knowing how many students will eat each day. There are 2,000 students in Dulaney and the number of students who decide to get a school lunch always fluctuates. Some days there could be 500 students who want a lunch, and some days there could only be 200. But no matter how many students want a lunch, there will always be enough food, thanks to the hard-working lunch crew at Dulaney.

Having conversations with the students at Dulaney motivates the lunchroom workers and keeps them going everyday. Dulaney is extremely lucky to have these incredible workers, and a huge “thank you” goes out to them – be sure to express your gratitude for all their hard work when you see them around Dulaney.
