Summer Bucket List

Summer Bucket List

Brooke Ellis, Staff Writer

With 74 days of summer vacation, you’re probably trying to find a good way to spend it. Here are five places to go this summer, all within a two hour drive from Dulaney.

  • Spend a day in Georgetown with delicious food, fashionable stores and rich history. Some highly recommended and affordable restaurants include Baked and Wired, Call Your Mother and Chaia all varying in cuisine (cupcakes, sandwiches, bagels, and mexican). Looking to shop? M Street is packed with local stores and restaurants for you to enjoy. You can also visit the many historical museums and Georgetown University itself–maybe you’ll even want to apply there!
  • A local ice cream shop located in Glen Arm, Maryland, Prigels gives you a taste of the farm life, while consuming some delicious homemade ice cream. Prigels has outdoor seating with a great view of the sunset and cows! Not only is there ice cream, but there is a  new deli which offers sandwiches and snacks for people wanting a more savory option. Prigels has seasonal flavors and a crafty menu so everyone can taste the delicious items. Some of my favorites include the fruity pebble milkshake, the turtle sundae and the key lime pie ice cream.
  • Take a trip to Monkton and visit the Gunpowder River, where tubes are available for rental and trails open to explore. For those who don’t want to get in the freshwater, bike rentals are popular to take along the scenic trails. The Gunpowder River can be a great place for family and friends to enjoy a cool splash on a hot summer day, and don’t forget sweet treats offered at the nearby Monkton Cafe, including ice cream, sandwiches, and snow cones.
  • If you’re looking for another outdoor adventure, Elk Neck State Park is an exciting place to start. Formed by the Chesapeake Bay and Elk River, this park has hiking trails and sandy beaches with great views of the Bay. You can swim, kayak at the North East Beach Area or hike to the Turkey Point Lighthouse. They also have campgrounds open if you’d want to spend more than a day there.
  • Beaver Dam is a local swim club in Cockeysville, Maryland that offers day passes throughout the summer. The quarry has a 5 foot section and 40 foot section (for advanced swimmers) for you to explore and swim in. They have a rope swing, volleyball courts, and snack bar so if you don’t feel like swimming, you have plenty of other options. Beaver Dam is a fun activity for a day to do with friends and escape the heat of the summer sun.

With these new places to explore, I hope your summer will be as jammed packed as Phineas and Ferbs.
