BCPS recognizes Juneteenth

BCPS+recognizes+Juneteenth

Baltimore County Public Schools(BCPS) prepares to acknowledge Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of slaves in America.

Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. It is a holiday created to remember the hardships faced by enslaved peoples throughout American history and to celebrate freedom and the vibrant beauty of African American culture. BCPS will close all offices on Juneteenth in recognition of this significant holiday. Juneteenth was originally celebrated in 1865 in Texas when enslaved people were informed that the Civil War had ended and were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.

The BCPS website states, “We applaud the recognition of this important historical event.”

BCPS urges its community members to explore African American history and encourages everyone to learn more about Juneteenth by visiting historical locations and museums like the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
