After years of absence, Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) has begun distributing identification (ID) cards to students. These cards aim to simplify the process of students entering school late and leaving early.

Beginning in fall 2024, using the new ID card, students can swipe in at a kiosk in the office when arriving late. When getting a pass to leave early, students can scan their ID and drop a note off.

The ID cards include a student’s name, picture and student identification number. This information on the ID cards also allows students to own a form of legal identification backed by a government agency, before getting a learner’s permit or driver’s license.

While a student ID cannot be used for other forms of legal identification, it can also be used for certain events outside school.

The new IDs also feature several resources on the back, including the numbers of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Safe School Tip Hotline.
