Heavy Rain and Frequent Lightning Push Slowly Across North and West Alabama Toward Birmingham

HUNTSVILLE — Thunderstorms rolling across north and west Alabama continue to produce very heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning this afternoon, with the activity slowly tracking to the east and southeast toward Huntsville, Birmingham, and Tuscaloosa. Radar shows multiple clusters of storms stretching from near Florence down through Hamilton, Winfield, and Demopolis as of 2:55 p.m. CDT.

Storms Stack Up From Florence to Demopolis as the Afternoon Wears On

Radar imagery shows several distinct clusters of storms spread across the region, with the most intense activity concentrated near Florence and Huntsville in the north and a separate band tracking through Hamilton, Winfield, and Jasper. Additional cells are firing near Tuscaloosa and stretching south toward Demopolis and Selma. The storms are moving slowly to the east and southeast, meaning areas including Birmingham, Hoover, and Tuscaloosa could see the heaviest rain and lightning activity as the afternoon progresses.

Why Slow-Moving Storms Raise Their Own Concerns

Even without a formal severe thunderstorm warning attached, slow-moving storms carry their own risks. Very heavy rain falling over the same areas for an extended period can lead to localized flooding, especially on roadways and in low-lying spots, while frequent lightning remains a hazard for anyone outdoors regardless of a storm’s overall intensity. Gusty winds associated with the activity can also down limbs or create hazardous driving conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles.

No Warnings Currently Tied to This Activity

As of this writing, this represents general thunderstorm activity rather than a confirmed severe thunderstorm or flash flood warning. No damage or flooding reports have been confirmed. This article will be updated if the National Weather Service issues any warnings or if storm reports come in as the activity continues east.

Staying Safe as Storms Track Through the Afternoon

While storms are nearby:

  • Move indoors during frequent lightning, no outdoor activity is worth the risk during active thunderstorm activity
  • Avoid low-lying roads and dips, heavy rain can cause rapid, localized flooding even without a formal warning
  • Drive with caution if gusty winds or heavy rain reduce visibility on the road

As the storms continue east:

  • Stay updated on radar trends, since these storms are moving slowly and could linger over the same areas
  • Watch for possible warnings if any cells strengthen as they track toward Birmingham and points east

A Slow Crawl Through Alabama’s Afternoon

With storms moving only gradually to the east and southeast, communities across north and west Alabama could see extended periods of heavy rain and lightning before the activity clears out, a pattern that tends to raise localized flooding concerns even in the absence of a severe thunderstorm warning.
