Evolving Supercells Threaten 80 MPH Wind Gusts and Golf Ball Hail Across Utah-Nevada Border as Watch Odds Hit 40%

SALT LAKE CITY — The Storm Prediction Center issued Mesoscale Discussion #2167 for a zone spanning the Utah-Nevada-Idaho border region, warning of scattered intensifying thunderstorms, including a few evolving supercells, through 3 to 5 p.m. MDT.

Forecasters placed the probability of a severe thunderstorm watch being issued for this area at 40%, with the discussion valid until 3:45 p.m. MDT Saturday.

  • Wind: Most probable peak intensity of 65 to 80 mph
  • Tornado: Potential up to 90 mph
  • Hail: Up to 1.25 inches in diameter
  • Watch probability: 40%, concerning severe potential
  • Valid until: 3:45 p.m. MDT

Radar data shows scattered storm cells developing across the outlined area, with a mix of surface observations showing dewpoints and temperatures supportive of continued intensification through the afternoon hours.

Storms Still Organizing as the Afternoon Peak Approaches

The Storm Prediction Center’s discussion indicates confidence that additional supercells could develop as the atmosphere continues to destabilize into the mid-afternoon. Whether a formal watch is issued will depend on how quickly the scattered cells organize over the next several hours.

No damage or severe weather reports have been confirmed yet. This article will be updated if the Storm Prediction Center issues a formal severe thunderstorm watch for this area.
