Lily Xu, a senior at Dulaney High School, runs her own small business, Glass Lily, which offers a variety of handmade items.
Though Xu has been crocheting since she was nine years old, it wasn’t until the pandemic that crocheting became her regular hobby and her friends began to show interest online.
“I would post what I made on my personal account on Instagram and a lot of my friends would tell me they would be interested in buying,” Xu said.
Xu’s interest began with meeting a friend of her father’s, who often crocheted. Shortly after, Xu was inspired to teach herself.
“I learned at nine through watching YouTube videos and a lot of practice through the years,” Xu said.

Xu currently runs a small solo business making crocheted flower bouquets, stuffed animals and handmade jewelry. Xu also mentions that many of her friends crochet, and they encourage her business. While Xu primarily sells to the Dulaney community, she hopes to expand once in college.
“I’ll definitely be crocheting in college. It’s one of my favorite hobbies and hopefully I’ll still be able to share it,” Xu said.
Dulaney students and other community members can see Xu’s creations on her instagram account @__glasslily.
