Isolated Damaging Gusts Threaten Gulf Coast to Coastal Carolinas Monday as Level 2 Slight Risk Targets New Orleans, Jackson, Wilmington

NEW ORLEANS — A Level 2 of 5 Slight Risk is in place for Monday, August 24 across a broad stretch of the Gulf Coast and coastal Carolinas, including New Orleans, Jackson, Wilmington, and New Bern, as forecasters track scattered pulse-type thunderstorms capable of producing isolated damaging wind gusts.

What the Outlook Covers

  • Risk level: Level 2 of 5, Slight Risk
  • Coverage area: Gulf Coast into coastal Carolinas, including New Orleans, Jackson, Wilmington, New Bern
  • Primary hazard: isolated damaging wind gusts from pulse-type storms
  • Storm type: pulse-type storms, not organized or widespread severe

Why This Setup Matters

Forecasters say the atmosphere Monday has lots of instability, or storm fuel, but little to no wind shear aloft. That combination typically does not support long-lived, organized severe storms. Instead, it favors pulse-type storms, individual cells that build quickly off daytime heating and can produce a few strong downbursts before collapsing, rather than a sustained line or cluster of severe weather.

Where Things Stand

As of this writing, storms have not yet developed across the outlined risk area, and no damage or wind reports have been published. This article will be updated if confirmed storm reports become available.

Severe Weather Safety Guide

Before storms arrive:

  • Secure loose outdoor items that could become airborne in a sudden downburst
  • Plan for quick-forming storms: pulse-type storms can develop with less advance warning than organized systems

When a warning is issued:

  • Move indoors immediately if a storm is approaching, downbursts can develop with little notice
  • Stay away from windows during high wind gusts

After the storm passes:

  • Check for downed limbs or damage near your property
  • Avoid downed power lines and treat all as live
