Two Women Die After Jeep Grand Cherokee Crashes and Catches Fire on East Lancaster Avenue in Downingtown, Pennsylvania

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Two women were killed Sunday when a Jeep Grand Cherokee crashed and burst into flames on East Lancaster Avenue in Downingtown. Police said the driver went off the roadway near the Downingtown Log House around noon before hitting a concrete retention wall.

The driver died at the scene. A passenger in the front seat was pulled from the SUV by Downingtown police officers and a bystander, then taken to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Police say the Jeep left the road before striking a concrete wall

Investigators said the silver Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling eastbound on East Lancaster Avenue when it veered off the road along the westbound side. The vehicle then struck the wall and caught fire, turning a midday crash into a deadly emergency response.

Downingtown police have not said what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. They also have not released the names of the two women killed in the crash.

Bystander and officers pulled the passenger from the burning SUV

Police credited a bystander and responding officers with helping remove the passenger from the front seat after the crash. Medics then treated her before she was transported to a hospital.

Even with that response, the passenger later died from her injuries. The sequence underscores how quickly the crash became a fire scene, with emergency crews working amid the vehicle blaze and the investigation that followed.

East Lancaster Avenue was shut down for hours during the investigation

East Lancaster Avenue remained closed until 3 p.m. Sunday while police investigated the crash. The closure came after the wreck in a busy stretch of roadway near a well-known Downingtown landmark.

Authorities did not immediately say whether other vehicles were involved. For now, the focus remains on reconstructing how the Jeep ended up off the road and into the wall before catching fire.

Police have not identified the victims or said what led to the wreck

Downingtown police said the victims’ names will not be released yet. They also have not announced whether speed, distraction or a medical episode may have played a role.

Those unanswered questions are now central to the investigation. The crash left one woman dead at the scene and another who later died at the hospital, turning a Sunday afternoon drive into a fatal tragedy.

Witnesses asked to contact Downingtown police with information

Investigators are asking anyone who saw the crash or has details to contact Downingtown police. The department said witnesses can call 610-269-0263 or email traffic@downingtown.org.

Police are still collecting information as they piece together the chain of events on East Lancaster Avenue. Anyone with firsthand observations could help clarify how the SUV left the road and why the fire started so quickly.

Local news that matters, from Dulaney Griffin.
