Topeka Police Investigate Hit-And-Run That Killed 14-Year-Old Boy Near Lake Shawnee Late Wednesday Night in Southeast Kansas Neighborhood

TOPEKA, KS — Police in Topeka are investigating a deadly hit-and-run after a 14-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle late Wednesday night near Lake Shawnee. Officers and emergency crews were sent to the 2200 block of SE 37th Street shortly after 10:30 p.m. after reports of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash.

Topeka Police Lt. Kerry Connell said the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not released details about the vehicle or the person who was driving, and no additional information was made public about how the crash happened.

Crash happened on SE 37th Street near Lake Shawnee

The collision took place in southeast Topeka in the 2200 block of SE 37th Street, close to Lake Shawnee. That stretch of road became the focus of a police response that brought traffic disruption as investigators worked through the scene.

Officials described the call as an injury accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. At this point, police have not said whether the boy was walking along the street, crossing it, or otherwise in the roadway when he was hit.

No information has been released about weather, visibility, speed, or other conditions that may have played a role. Those are among the details investigators often try to establish after a fatal crash.

Street closure lasted for hours during the investigation

SE 37th Street was shut down in both directions between SE Long and SE Lakeshore Boulevard for several hours while officers examined the area. The closure allowed police to document the scene and look for evidence tied to the driver who left after the collision.

Long road closures are common after serious crashes because investigators need time to map the scene, gather physical evidence, and speak with possible witnesses. In this case, police did not say when the roadway was reopened, only that the closure lasted for hours.

The shutdown also underscores how heavily a fatal wreck can affect a neighborhood street, especially when it happens at night and requires a full response from law enforcement and emergency crews.

Police have released few details so far

As of the latest update, Topeka police had not provided a description of the vehicle, a suspect, or any timeline for a possible arrest. The department also did not say whether investigators believe the crash was intentional or whether the driver may have known a person had been struck.

That limited disclosure is not unusual in the early stages of a hit-and-run case. Investigators often hold back details while they check nearby cameras, review physical evidence, and compare witness accounts.

For now, the main confirmed facts are the location, the time of the crash, and the victim’s age. Beyond that, police have kept the case details close as the investigation continues.

How the public can help investigators

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact investigators directly. Tips can be emailed to telltpd@topeka.org, or people can call the Topeka Police Criminal Investigation Bureau at 785-368-9400.

Anonymous tips are also being accepted through Shawnee County Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007. Police said people can make anonymous tips online as well, giving the public several ways to share information without identifying themselves.

In hit-and-run cases, even a small detail can matter. A vehicle description, dashcam video, or witness account may help investigators identify the driver and piece together the moments before and after the crash.

What the case means for the neighborhood

The death of a 14-year-old has left investigators looking not only for a driver, but for answers about how a child ended up in the roadway at that hour. The location near Lake Shawnee is a familiar stretch for many Topeka residents, making the crash especially stark for the surrounding neighborhood.

Police have not said whether the teenager lived nearby or was known to have been in the area for any particular reason. For now, the case remains a fatal traffic investigation, with officers trying to determine both who was responsible and what led up to the impact.

The Kansas crash adds to the steady toll of pedestrian deaths that law enforcement agencies across the country continue to investigate. In this case, the focus remains on finding the hit-and-run driver and answering the basic questions still left open by the scene.
