Coventry Police Identify 21-Year-Old Sterling Man Killed in Near Head-On Crash on Harkney Hill Road After Tuesday Collision Near Camp Westwood Road

COVENTRY, RI — Coventry police have identified the young driver who died after a serious crash on Harkney Hill Road earlier this week. The victim was 21-year-old Liam Stahlbush of Sterling, Connecticut.

Police said the collision happened Tuesday near Camp Westwood Road and was described as a nearly head-on crash. Both vehicles had only their drivers inside at the time.

Stahlbush was badly hurt in the wreck and was taken to Kent County Memorial Hospital, where he later died. The other driver was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries.

Police say the crash happened as a nearly head-on collision

Investigators have given only a limited account of how the vehicles came together, but they have described the impact as nearly head-on. That kind of crash often leaves little room for evasive action, and it can produce serious injuries even when speeds are not publicly known.

The collision took place on Harkney Hill Road near Camp Westwood Road, a stretch that became the focus of the police response on Tuesday. Coventry police have not released further details about the sequence of events leading up to the impact.

The crash remains under investigation, and officials have not said whether speed, roadway conditions, or any other factor played a role. For now, the basic facts remain the location, the vehicles involved, and the extent of the injuries suffered by each driver.

Liam Stahlbush died after being taken to Kent County Memorial Hospital

Stahlbush was the only occupant of one of the cars involved, according to police. After the crash, first responders transported him to Kent County Memorial Hospital because of the severity of his injuries.

He later died at the hospital. Police identified him as a 21-year-old from Sterling, Connecticut, bringing a name and hometown to a crash that had initially been described only in broad terms.

No other people were hurt in that vehicle, police said. The crash underscores how quickly a two-car collision can become fatal when the impact is severe enough to cause major trauma.

Second driver had minor injuries and has not been charged

The other driver was also taken to a hospital, but police said those injuries were minor. That driver was transported to Rhode Island Hospital after the collision.

At this point, Coventry police say no charges are pending against that person. Investigators have not announced any citation, arrest, or suspected criminal violation tied to the wreck.

That leaves the case squarely in the investigative phase. Police have not said whether they expect to issue more findings once the crash reconstruction or other review is complete.

Harkney Hill Road remains part of an active investigation

The crash site near Camp Westwood Road is still being reviewed as police work to determine what happened. No additional public information has been released about damage to the vehicles, road closure details, or the exact point of impact.

Because both drivers were alone in their vehicles, investigators do not appear to be dealing with passenger statements from the scene. That can leave physical evidence, vehicle position, and roadway conditions as central pieces of the case.

Coventry police have not said when the investigation may be finished. For now, the department’s update confirms the fatality, the injuries, and the fact that the second driver is not facing charges.

What the police update means for the community

Tuesday’s crash adds another serious roadway incident to the local picture in Coventry, where a single collision can quickly ripple through a neighborhood and a nearby town such as Sterling. A fatal wreck also sets off an immediate need for answers from investigators and concern from residents who travel the road regularly.

For now, police have kept the public record focused on the essentials: one young man died, one other driver was hurt, and the cause has not been publicly determined. Those details are enough to show the gravity of the crash without suggesting conclusions investigators have not made.

As the case moves forward, the main questions are whether police can pinpoint why the cars collided and whether anything beyond the basic roadway facts will change the current understanding of the wreck.
