Wisconsin Family Survives Interstate 41 Pileup Near Slinger After Their Vehicle Is Wedged Vertically Between Two Semis in a Six-Vehicle Crash

SLINGER, WI — A Wisconsin family survived a violent chain-reaction crash on Interstate 41 that left their vehicle pinned vertically between two semi-trucks near Slinger. The wreck happened on Aug. 18 and involved six vehicles and two semis, according to the sheriff’s office.

Three members of the family — Savannah Thill, her husband, Christian, and their 3-year-old daughter — were trapped inside the car and later taken to an intensive care unit, Alex Thill told WISN. He described the outcome as a miracle after what could have been a far worse crash scene.

Deadly first collision set off the pileup on Interstate 41

The sheriff’s office said the crash began after an initial collision in which a 57-year-old motorcyclist was killed. That first wreck left traffic stalled on the highway and created the dangerous backup that followed.

Officials said a southbound semi-truck then failed to stop for the stopped traffic and struck several vehicles. The impact triggered the larger pileup, turning one crash into a multi-vehicle emergency along the busy roadway.

WISN reported that the family’s car ended up wedged in an upright position between the two semis, an image that shows just how severe the impact was. The sheriff’s office did not immediately provide additional detail on the sequence beyond that chain reaction.

Savannah Thill suffered the most serious injuries, family says

Alex Thill said his sister, Savannah, was badly hurt in the wreck. He said she suffered a severe knee injury and is not expected to walk for about a year.

Christian Thill also sustained major injuries, including multiple broken bones and a crushed nose, according to Alex Thill’s comments to WISN. The injuries left the couple facing a long recovery after what family members described as an extraordinary escape from a deadly crash.

The family’s 3-year-old daughter was hurt as well, but her injuries were less severe than the adults’. Alex Thill said she had a swollen knee, stitches and a serious concussion.

The child was hurt but the family says survival mattered most

Despite the extent of the damage, the family’s focus remained on the fact that everyone lived through the wreck. Alex Thill said the crash left them shaken, hospitalized and looking at a difficult recovery ahead.

The daughter’s injuries, including the concussion, made the emergency even more frightening for relatives, but the family was grateful she survived. The crash illustrates how quickly a traffic backup can turn deadly when a large truck cannot stop in time.

WISN reported that the family was taken to an intensive care unit after the collision. The outlet said relatives viewed the outcome as nothing short of remarkable given how the vehicle was trapped between the semis.

A six-vehicle wreck left Interstate 41 shut in the aftermath

The sheriff’s office said the crash involved six vehicles and two semis, making it far more than a routine highway collision. The pileup unfolded after stalled traffic left drivers with little room to react.

Although the family’s vehicle drew attention because of where it ended up, investigators said the broader crash scene began with the earlier fatal motorcycle collision. That sequence left emergency responders dealing with multiple damaged vehicles and serious injuries along the interstate.

No further details were immediately given about whether charges or citations were expected. The sheriff’s office focused on the collision sequence and the number of vehicles involved.

Family members call the outcome a miracle after a long road ahead

Alex Thill told WISN the family still has a long recovery ahead, but he emphasized their gratitude that the crash did not end in more loss. The description of the wreck as a miracle reflected how close the situation came to turning fatal.

For Savannah and Christian Thill, the physical recovery will likely be lengthy, especially with the severe knee injury and multiple broken bones. Their daughter also faces follow-up care after the concussion, stitches and swelling.

The crash near Slinger has become a stark reminder of the danger that can unfold in seconds on a highway when traffic stops unexpectedly and a heavy truck cannot stop. In this case, survival came with painful injuries, but the family made it through.
