YORK, ME — A York man died Tuesday morning, about 18 hours after a motorcycle crash at Route 1 and Mountain Road that police say happened during the Labor Day holiday in town.
The York Police Department said the rider, 27, was taken to Portsmouth Hospital after the wreck on Monday afternoon. He died from his injuries at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Police have not released the names of either driver. The crash remains under investigation.
How police say the crash unfolded at Route 1 and Mountain Road
According to York police, the crash happened around 3:32 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Route 1 and Mountain Road. A car traveling north on Route 1 had stopped while waiting to turn left onto Mountain Road.
Police said a southbound vehicle also stopped and let the car begin the turn. The motorcycle was heading south on Route 1 as well, and investigators say it passed the stopped southbound car before striking the vehicle that had started turning.
The sequence put several vehicles in the same intersection at the same time, and police are still working to sort out exactly what happened before impact.

Emergency responders transported the motorcycle rider to Portsmouth Hospital after the collision. York police said he died there the next morning from his injuries.
Authorities identified him only as a 27-year-old man from York. No additional personal details were released.
The driver of the car, a 26-year-old man from York, was not injured, police said. His name also was not released.
No one else was hurt in the collision, police said
Police said the car driver was the only other person directly involved in the crash. He was not hurt and remained unidentified in the public statement from the department.
The release did not describe damage to either vehicle, and police did not say whether speed, distraction, or road conditions may have played a role. Those questions remain part of the investigation.
Route 1 is one of York’s main travel corridors, and Mountain Road is a busy turn point through the area. Monday’s crash closed out the holiday with a fatal collision on a road many drivers use daily.

The York Police Department said its investigation is ongoing. Officers have not said whether any citations or charges are being considered.
