WICHITA, KS — Police say a 21-year-old man is in custody after a Saturday morning shooting in southeast Wichita left three of his family members dead. Investigators identified the suspect as Juan Valenzuela-Silva and say the arrest came within two hours of the killings.
Wichita police said the shooting unfolded at a home in the 5000 block of East Blake Street around 11:29 a.m. Officers who reached the residence found three people with gunshot wounds inside. All three were later pronounced dead at the scene.
Police believe the case was domestic in nature. Officials also said the search for the full story behind the violence has only begun.
Officers say a caller inside the home alerted dispatchers after the gunfire
Captain Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department said a person inside the residence called dispatchers to report that people had been shot. That call sent officers to the address in the 5000 block of East Blake Street, where the victims were found.
Police said seven people were inside the house at the time of the shooting, including the suspect. Three people escaped without injury, among them one juvenile girl. Investigators have not publicly identified the relationship between the suspect and the victims beyond saying they were family.
Chief Joe Sullivan said the department’s first concern was the family left behind and the wider community. He described the case as a horrific act and said the department’s investigation is still active.
Victims were identified as a 49 year old man, a 40 year old woman and a 25 year old woman
Police said the dead were a 49-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman. All three were family to Valenzuela-Silva, according to investigators.
Authorities have not released a more specific family relationship. That detail remains under review as detectives continue sorting out what happened inside the home before officers arrived.
While police have pointed to a domestic issue, they have not described a motive. No additional information about the moments leading up to the shooting was immediately disclosed during the afternoon briefing.
FLOCK cameras helped track the suspect vehicle across multiple jurisdictions
Police said they quickly focused on a 2014 black Infiniti QX60 they believed Valenzuela-Silva left the scene in after the shooting. Wichita officers used FLOCK cameras to follow the vehicle through multiple jurisdictions.
Chief Sullivan said the camera system helped investigators understand the car’s direction early in the response, then kept updated information flowing when that direction changed. He said that allowed agencies along the route to respond in real time.
The technology, combined with coordination between departments, helped officers narrow in on the suspect fast enough to set up the arrest before the day was much older.
Butler County deputies stopped the car south of Augusta
According to police, Kansas Highway Patrol aircraft were also used in case the vehicle continued to flee. The search ended when Butler County sheriff’s deputies made a traffic stop just south of Augusta.
Sheriff Monty Hughey said the arrest happened along State Street in Augusta, just north of the railroad tracks. He said Valenzuela-Silva was taken into custody without incident and was not armed.
Chief Sullivan praised the response as a team effort, saying the cooperation across agencies was critical to the quick arrest. He thanked law enforcement partners for the level of coordination involved in the case.

For now, authorities say the focus remains on the crime scene, the family members who died, and the unanswered questions surrounding the shooting inside the East Blake Street home.
