Vehicle Tied to Missing Person Found in Leawood Retention Pond After Volunteer Dive Team Spots Car in Sonar Search at 14700 Block of Norwood

LEAWOOD, KS — A vehicle connected to a missing person was found Saturday morning at the bottom of a retention pond in Leawood, after a volunteer dive team narrowed in on a large metal object during a search.

The discovery came in the 14700 block of Norwood. Police were told about the find just before noon, and the car was later removed with help from a tow truck and the Overland Park Police Department’s dive team.

Sonar led divers to the car hidden in the water

The search team used a GIS satellite image to help locate the pond area before deploying sonar equipment across the water. That technology picked up a large metal object below the surface, giving divers a specific target to inspect.

Once a diver entered the pond to check the object, the team confirmed it was a vehicle. The car also had a license plate connected to a missing person, tying the recovery to an active missing-person matter.

Officials did not say how long the vehicle had been underwater or whether anyone was inside when it was found.

Leawood police were notified before noon

The Leawood Police Department was notified of the discovery shortly before noon on Saturday. The timing suggests the search and recovery operation moved quickly once the sonar hit was confirmed by a diver.

Police have not released additional details about the missing-person case tied to the plate, including the identity of the person or whether the vehicle was registered to them. At this stage, the department’s public update centered on the location and recovery of the car.

The pond sits in a residential and commercial corridor near Norwood, making the find a notable one for the area even before investigators release more information.

Tow truck and Overland Park dive team helped pull the vehicle out

After the vehicle was identified, recovery required more than the initial dive. A tow truck was brought in to assist, along with the Overland Park Police Department’s dive team, which helped remove the car from the pond.

That kind of joint operation is common when submerged vehicles need to be lifted safely from difficult water conditions. The use of both a tow truck and a second police dive team indicates the car was lodged deeply enough to require coordinated equipment and personnel.

No injuries were reported in the recovery operation, and officials have not said whether the pond will remain closed while investigators continue their work.

Retention ponds can hide vehicles for long periods

Retention ponds are built to collect runoff, and their depth and murky water can make objects difficult to see from the surface. When a vehicle ends up underwater, sonar often becomes the most effective first tool for locating it.

In this case, the large metal reading gave the volunteer team a reason to send a diver down for confirmation. That mix of mapping technology and in-water verification is what ultimately turned an uncertain signal into a confirmed recovery.

Leawood police have not said whether the case is being treated as an accident, a missing-person search, or part of a broader investigation.

What remains unanswered after the recovery

For now, the key facts are the location, the recovery, and the link to a missing person. The department has not identified the missing person, explained how the vehicle got into the pond, or said whether any further search is planned.

Those unanswered questions leave the case open, even after the car itself was brought out of the water. If investigators determine the vehicle is connected to a larger search effort, that information will likely come later from police.

Until then, Saturday’s recovery stands as a significant step in a case that began with a sonar scan and ended with a tow truck pulling a car from the pond.

Local news that matters, from Dulaney Griffin.
