CEDAR CITY, UT — A motorcyclist died Monday morning after a collision with a school bus in Cedar City, according to Utah Highway Patrol. Troopers said the crash happened on state Route 56, also known as Lund Highway, and shut down traffic in both directions for hours while emergency crews worked the scene.
Officials said the bus was traveling east when the motorcycle turned left on a yellow-arrow traffic light and moved into its path. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Utah Highway Patrol said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet and protective gear at the time of the crash.
Utah Highway Patrol says the motorcycle turned left into the bus’s path
Lt. Zach Randall of the Utah Highway Patrol said the motorcycle made the left turn at the signal before the bus struck it. Investigators said the bus was headed east on state Route 56 when the impact happened.
The timing of the turn appears to be central to the crash sequence described by investigators. At this stage, Utah Highway Patrol has not said whether citations will be issued or whether additional factors are being reviewed as part of the investigation.
No students were on board because the bus was starting its pickup route
Officials said the school bus was on its way to begin its pickup route when the collision happened. There were no students on board, which kept the crash from becoming a school-transportation incident with children inside the vehicle.
That detail also means the bus was operating before the normal pickup phase of the route began. The district and state officials have not described any injuries to the bus driver, and the main fatality reported in the crash was the motorcyclist.
State Route 56 was closed in both directions during the response
Crews blocked all lanes eastbound and westbound for several hours as they responded to the crash. The closure affected a stretch of one of Cedar City’s key travel corridors, forcing traffic away from the area while investigators and emergency responders worked.
State Route 56 carries traffic through the Lund Highway area, and the shutdown underscored how quickly a single collision can disrupt movement across town. Authorities have not said how long the investigation at the scene lasted, but the road remained closed while the response continued.
Iron County School District confirms the bus belonged to its fleet
Shauna Lund, communications director and foundation coordinator for the Iron County School District, confirmed that the bus involved belonged to the district. She issued a brief statement offering condolences to the family of the person who died in the crash.
“We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the family of the driver involved in this morning’s tragic accident,” Lund said. District officials have not released additional details about the bus driver or the route beyond confirming that no students were aboard.
A fatal crash now under investigation in southern Utah
The fatal wreck adds to the toll of roadway collisions that state and local agencies investigate across southern Utah. In this case, Utah Highway Patrol is leading the inquiry and has already identified the motorcycle’s left turn as the key movement preceding impact.
The case remains open as officials continue sorting out the sequence of events at the intersection. For now, the confirmed facts are limited to a dead motorcyclist, a school bus that was not carrying students, and a major highway closure that lasted for hours.
