KANSAS CITY, MO — A volunteer dive crew discovered a vehicle Saturday morning in a retention pond in Leawood, and police say the car may be connected to a missing person case. The find came after divers used sonar to search the water and then entered the pond to check a large metal object.
Leawood police said the vehicle was located in the 14700 block of Norwood Street. By around noon, officers had been notified of the discovery, and the case quickly shifted from a routine search to a recovery effort involving multiple agencies.
Sonar search leads divers to the submerged car
The Leawood Police Department said the volunteer crew first scanned the pond with sonar before making a closer dive. That process helped the team identify the object as a vehicle rather than something else resting on the bottom.
Police said the discovery was made in a retention pond, which can make searches difficult because visibility is limited and debris can hide what is underwater. In this case, the sonar-guided approach gave divers a way to narrow the search before anyone went below the surface.
Once the object was examined, the team confirmed it was a car. Police have not said how long the vehicle may have been in the pond or what led it there.
License plate links the vehicle to a missing person case
After the car was identified, investigators said the license plate matched a vehicle tied to a missing persons investigation. That connection is why police immediately began treating the recovery as potentially significant to the search for the missing person.

Overland Park dive team helps pull the car from the water
The Overland Park Police Department’s dive team assisted with recovery efforts after the vehicle was located. A tow truck then pulled the car from the pond, bringing the search operation above water and into the recovery phase.
Police did not say exactly when the tow truck arrived or how long the removal took. Even so, the joint response shows how local departments often coordinate when submerged vehicles are found in ponds or other hard-to-reach waters.
Leawood police described the effort in a press release, but they have not provided more information about the car’s condition or whether investigators found anything else inside it.
