Connecticut Man Killed in Coventry, Rhode Island Head-On Crash on Harkney Hill Road After Tuesday Collision Sends Another Driver to Hospital

COVENTRY, RI — A Connecticut man died after a head-on crash in Coventry on Tuesday evening, according to police. Liam Stahlbush, 21, of Sterling, was hurt in the collision on Harkney Hill Road, a rural two-lane road, shortly before 4:30 p.m.

Police said Stahlbush was taken to Kent County Memorial Hospital in Warwick with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead there about an hour later, around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police identify Liam Stahlbush and pinpoint the crash location on Harkney Hill Road

Coventry police identified the victim as Stahlbush, a 21-year-old from Sterling, Connecticut. The crash happened on Harkney Hill Road, a stretch police described as rural and two-lane.

The location matters because it suggests the kind of road where oncoming traffic can be especially dangerous when a vehicle crosses the center line or loses control. Police have not said exactly how the vehicles came together, only that it was a head-on collision.

Stahlbush was first listed as having life-threatening injuries before being transported to the Warwick hospital. He later died there from those injuries.

Other driver survived with minor injuries after being taken to Rhode Island Hospital

Police said the other driver in the crash was sent to Rhode Island Hospital for minor injuries. Officials did not release that person’s name.

That detail stands in contrast to the severity of the injuries suffered by Stahlbush, who died later the same day. No information was given about whether anyone else was in either vehicle.

At this stage, police have only described the second driver’s condition as minor injuries. They have not said whether that person remained in the hospital, was released, or faced any charges.

Accident reconstruction team is still examining what happened before the impact

Coventry Police Accident Reconstruction is handling the investigation into the crash. That unit typically examines vehicle damage, roadway marks, witness accounts, and other physical evidence to piece together how a collision unfolded.

Lead investigator Lt. Devan Casey said Friday that there was “no immediate evidence to suggest any contributing factors to the crash.” Police did not say whether speed, impairment, distraction, weather, or road conditions were suspected.

The statement indicates investigators had not identified an obvious cause by the end of the week. Police have not announced any conclusions and the case remains under review.

Kent County Memorial Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital both treated victims after the wreck

Stahlbush was taken from the crash scene to Kent County Memorial Hospital in Warwick, where doctors later pronounced him dead. That hospital became the first major stop after emergency responders determined his injuries were life-threatening.

The other driver was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, another major trauma center in the state, for treatment of minor injuries. The two hospitals handled the victims separately after the collision.

Those hospital transfers show how quickly responders moved after the crash. Police did not provide details on the emergency response beyond the transport of the two drivers.

What police have said so far and what remains unanswered

So far, police have confirmed the fatality, the time of the crash, the road where it happened, and the condition of the other driver. They also have said the investigation is active and being led by the department’s accident reconstruction team.

What remains open is the exact sequence that caused the head-on collision. Police have not said whether either vehicle crossed the center line, whether road conditions played a role, or whether any citations or criminal charges are expected.

For now, the case is being treated as a fatal traffic crash with no immediate sign of additional contributing factors. Investigators are still gathering information and reviewing evidence from the scene.
