COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Investigators are searching for a suspect after three people were shot in Colorado Springs early Sunday morning.
Police said officers were notified around 2:20 a.m. about the shooting on S. Circle Drive south of Airport Road. When officers got there, they found a woman with a gunshot wound and gave her aid until medical crews arrived. Two other victims, a woman and a man, later showed up at the hospital in private vehicles.
Victims taken to the hospital after arriving separately
All three victims were treated for gunshot wounds and were listed in stable but serious condition, according to police.
The first victim was helped at the scene before being taken to the hospital by medical personnel. The other two victims did not arrive by ambulance. Instead, they came in on their own after the shooting, which gave officers a second set of injuries to account for as the case unfolded.
Police have not released the victims’ names or ages.
No suspect identified as detectives begin assault investigation
No suspects had been identified by Sunday morning. Police did not immediately say how many people may have been involved or whether the shooting happened inside a car, near a home or in another setting.
Detectives from Colorado Springs police’s Assault Unit are handling the case. That unit typically investigates violent crimes, and in this case officers are still working to piece together what led to the gunfire and who opened fire.
Authorities have not announced any arrests.
S. Circle Drive corridor has seen another violent call
The shooting happened on a stretch of S. Circle Drive south of Airport Road, a busy area in the city’s southeast side. Police did not say whether the victims and suspect knew each other.
The location details matter because investigators often use nearby businesses, homes and traffic patterns to reconstruct a fast-moving shooting scene. At this point, though, police have only confirmed the general area and the time of the call.
No additional public safety warning was issued in connection with the shooting.
Police are still gathering witness accounts and scene evidence
As with many early-stage shooting investigations, detectives are likely looking for witnesses, surveillance video and any physical evidence left behind at the scene. Police have not said whether a weapon was recovered.
Officials also have not said whether the injuries happened during an argument, a targeted attack or another type of confrontation. For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the time, the place and the condition of the three people who were shot.
Anyone with information would typically be asked to contact investigators, though police had not issued a specific public request in the details released Sunday morning.
Another recent Colorado Springs shooting put a child in the hospital
The day’s news came shortly after another shooting in Colorado Springs that left a child wounded on Thursday morning, a case that ended with a suspect arrested. That earlier incident underscores how often police in the city are being called to gunfire scenes.
Sunday’s case remains open, and investigators are still trying to determine what happened before the shots were fired near Airport Road. For now, police say the focus is on identifying suspects and learning how the three victims were shot.
The investigation remains active.
