Arizona Troopers Arrest Man After He Allegedly Used Red and Blue Lights to Pull Over a Tesla on Interstate 17 Near Dove Valley Road

PHOENIX, AZ — Arizona authorities are asking for possible additional victims after a man allegedly posed as a police officer and pulled over a Tesla on Interstate 17. State troopers say the encounter happened Thursday morning and ended with the driver of a Chevrolet pickup being arrested on a charge of impersonating a police officer.

The traffic stop drew attention because the truck was equipped with dashboard-mounted red-and-blue lights, a setup that can make a civilian vehicle look like an emergency responder. Troopers say the man remained at the scene and was still communicating with authorities when they arrived.

Traffic stop began near Dove Valley Road

According to Carscoops, the incident happened at 8:29 a.m. Thursday on southbound Interstate 17 near Dove Valley Road in Phoenix. Police said the Chevrolet pickup used the emergency-style lights to stop a silver Tesla carrying two occupants.

That detail matters because the vehicle was stopped on a busy freeway during the morning commute, when drivers have only seconds to decide whether to move over, slow down, or pull to the shoulder. Authorities have not said what prompted the stop, only that the driver in the pickup was not acting with law enforcement authority.

Troopers say the driver had no police authority

When state troopers reached the scene, they spoke with the people involved and determined that the pickup driver was not affiliated with any police agency. They said he had no legal authority to conduct a traffic stop.

He was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of impersonating a police officer. Authorities did not publicly identify him. The case has been described as a public-safety issue because it involved someone using the appearance of official authority to control another motorist’s movements.

State officials are checking whether other stops happened

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said it is investigating whether this was an isolated incident or part of a pattern. In a Facebook post, the agency asked anyone who believes the same person or vehicle may have pulled them over to come forward.

Drivers can call 877-4AZ-TIPS or submit information at azactic.gov/report. Officials did not say how many possible victims they are looking for, but the public request suggests investigators want to know whether the pickup had been used in similar encounters before Thursday’s stop.

Why a fake traffic stop can put drivers at risk

Traffic stops already force drivers to make quick choices under stress, and that can become dangerous if the vehicle behind them is not a real police car. A motorist might pull over immediately, share personal information, or follow instructions before realizing something is wrong.

Authorities say that confusion is one reason impersonating an officer is treated seriously. The tactic can weaken trust in legitimate police and leave drivers unsure how to respond the next time emergency lights appear behind them on the road.

What Arizona officials have not said yet

So far, officials have not said why the pickup driver stopped the Tesla or whether any other vehicles were involved. They also have not released the suspect’s name or said whether additional charges are possible.

The investigation remains focused on whether the man used the same tactic elsewhere. For now, authorities are relying on tips from drivers who may have experienced a similar stop and did not realize at the time that the person behind them was not a real officer.
