COEUR D'ALENE, ID — A car broke through a protective railing at the Coeur d’Alene Resort parking garage on Friday afternoon and fell to the ground below, according to the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department.
The vehicle landed upside down, and the two people inside were already out of it by the time firefighters arrived. Both occupants suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Photos shared after the crash showed the damaged area and the vehicle resting on its roof. Fire officials said the crash remains unexplained, and the circumstances that led to it were not immediately available.
Bystander says the railing gave way before the car dropped
Kimberly Boltz posted photos on Facebook that were taken by her boyfriend, Dean Duckett, after the crash. Boltz said Duckett heard the railing break and looked up in time to see the car coming down.
“Dean said it was very surreal to watch,” Boltz said. She said he first heard the sound of the railing breaking, then saw the car drop from the garage.
According to Boltz, Duckett immediately ran toward the wrecked vehicle to help the people inside. She said he helped the man in the driver’s seat get out, while another person helped a woman leave the car.
Fire crews reached the scene after the occupants were already outside
The fire department said the two people were out of the car before emergency crews arrived, which meant responders did not have to perform an extraction. That detail helped limit the immediate rescue effort to assessing injuries and securing the scene.
Even so, both occupants were taken to the hospital for additional evaluation and treatment. Fire officials described the injuries as minor, but did not release more detail about the conditions of either person.
The crash also left visible damage to the garage structure, including the broken protective barrier that failed when the car went through it.
Resort staff begins repairs after the damaged garage section is secured
After the crash, resort staff began working to repair the damaged area, according to the fire department. That work will be needed before the garage section can be considered fully restored.
Officials did not say how long the repairs might take or whether the garage remained partially restricted after the incident. No additional details were released about structural damage beyond the broken railing and the fall to the ground below.
