KANSAS CITY, MO — Two people were killed Friday morning when a silver Jeep Cherokee left Interstate 435 in northeast Kansas City, crossed a grassy embankment and crashed into a parked semi-trailer, according to Kansas City police.
Officers were called to the 6920 Executive Drive area around 9:20 a.m. for what police described as a confirmed double-fatal crash. The driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said both people in the Jeep were wearing seat belts. Investigators have not said what caused the vehicle to run off the road just north of Front Street.
Jeep left the highway just north of Front Street
Preliminary findings show the Jeep was traveling south on I-435 before it departed the roadway for an undetermined reason. From there, it moved off the highway just north of Front Street and down the slope beside the interstate.
Police said the vehicle continued through a metal fence and crossed the parking lot of the business at 6920 Executive Drive. It then struck the front of a parked semi-trailer before coming to a stop.
That path took the vehicle from the interstate to a business parking lot in a matter of moments, turning a highway departure into a deadly impact. Investigators are still working to understand the chain of events.
Police have not said why the SUV veered off the road
Kansas City police have not released any information about whether speed, a medical issue, a mechanical problem or another factor may have contributed to the crash. The cause remains under investigation.
Because the Jeep left the road without a stated reason, detectives and crash investigators will likely focus on roadway evidence, vehicle damage and the final resting position of the SUV and semi-trailer. No additional details about the people who died were released.
