Search Paused on the Mississippi River Near San Souci Landing After a Boat Capsized in Osceola, Leaving One Dead, One Rescued and One Missing

OSCEOLA, AR — Search and rescue crews spent Monday on the Mississippi River after a boat overturned near Osceola, leaving one person dead, one person rescued and another still missing, according to the Osceola Fire Department.

Officials said three people were on board when the boat capsized. A woman was pulled from the water alive, while a man died. Crews continued searching for the third passenger near San Souci Landing.

The fire department did not immediately say what caused the boat to capsize. The search remained active as emergency crews worked the river area and awaited more information.

Three people were aboard when the boat overturned

The boat had three passengers when it capsized in the Mississippi River. That immediate count shaped the response from rescuers, who moved to account for everyone on board as quickly as possible.

One passenger, a woman, was rescued from the water. Another, a man, died. The third person remained unaccounted for Monday as crews kept searching the river.

Those details came from the Osceola Fire Department, which described the scene as a search and rescue operation rather than a full recovery effort. No further details about the passengers were released.

San Souci Landing became the center of the search

Rescue teams focused on the area around San Souci Landing, a river access point on the Mississippi. The landing gave crews a specific place to concentrate as they worked the water and nearby shoreline.

That kind of location can matter in river emergencies, where currents, visibility and access points can affect how quickly teams can move. The fire department identified the landing as the main area of the search.

Officials did not say how far the boat traveled before it overturned or whether weather, water conditions or mechanical trouble played any role in the incident.

Fire department officials confirmed the death and rescue

The Osceola Fire Department said the rescue effort left one person dead and one person saved. That information gave the clearest public accounting of the boat accident as crews continued working Monday.

The department also said another passenger was still missing. Searchers had not said whether that person might still be in the water, onshore or somewhere else along the river channel.

Because the incident involved a death and a missing person, responders appeared to be balancing immediate rescue needs with the possibility of a broader search operation across the river area.

Officials have not said what caused the capsizing

At the time of the update, authorities had not released a cause for the accident. The fire department’s statement focused on the number of people aboard and the current search effort.

That leaves several basic questions unanswered, including how the boat overturned and what led to the emergency on the Mississippi River. No details were provided about the type of boat, where it started or whether anyone nearby witnessed the capsizing.

For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the passenger count, the rescue, the death and the continuing search for the missing passenger.

Search crews kept working as more details were expected

The Osceola Fire Department said search and rescue efforts were underway Monday, and crews were still looking for the missing person. The operation remained active as the day went on.

FOX13 Memphis said it would continue to follow the story as more information became available. That next round of details may include an updated status for the missing passenger or a clearer account of what happened on the river.

For now, the incident stands as a stark river emergency with one confirmed death, one rescue and one person still missing near San Souci Landing.
