HENDERSON, KY — A Henderson teenager was killed early Sunday in a crash involving an ATV and a sedan, according to Kentucky State Police.
Troopers said 19-year-old Leland Majors died after the vehicle he was driving entered the path of a gray sedan at an intersection in Henderson County. The crash happened just after 1:15 a.m. on Sept. 13 at KY-359 and Grandpa Jones Road. Investigators said the collision is still being reviewed.
Troopers say Majors did not stop before crossing KY-359
KSP Post 16 said the preliminary investigation shows Majors was traveling east on Grandpa Jones Road when he allegedly failed to stop as he entered the intersection. At that point, investigators say, the ATV went into the path of a sedan heading south on KY-359.
The sedan was being driven by 45-year-old Betty McPherson of Morganfield. Kentucky State Police did not release details about the speed of either vehicle or say whether traffic controls were in place at the scene.
Crash scene was in Henderson County before sunrise Sunday
The wreck was reported to state troopers by the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, which contacted KSP just after the crash. The intersection sits in western Kentucky and serves traffic moving between the county road and the state highway.
The timing suggests the collision happened in the dark, before sunrise, when visibility can be reduced. State police have not said whether weather, lighting or roadway conditions played any role in what happened.
Majors died at Deaconess Midtown Hospital
Majors was taken to Deaconess Midtown Hospital after the crash. Investigators said he was pronounced dead there from his injuries.
Officials did not report any injuries for McPherson, and her condition was not included in the update released by Kentucky State Police. No further information about passengers or other vehicles was provided.
