Batavia Woman Gets 8 Years in Prison After Deadly Kane County DUI Crash on Bliss Road Killed Two People in Sugar Grove Township

SUGAR GROVE TOWNSHIP, IL — A Batavia woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty in a 2023 drunken-driving crash that killed two people in Blackberry Township and sent others to the hospital.

Melissa Hill, 58, entered her guilty plea on June 22 to two counts of aggravated DUI in a crash causing death. On Tuesday, a judge sentenced her to the Illinois Department of Corrections term tied to the deadly collision on Bliss Road.

How the crash unfolded on Bliss Road

Prosecutors said Hill was driving south on Bliss Road late on July 21, 2023, when she tried to pass another vehicle. She crossed into the northbound lane in a no-passing zone and hit a pickup truck head-on.

The impact triggered a four-vehicle crash in Sugar Grove. Authorities said the pickup was the first vehicle struck, and the collision caused damage and injuries involving the other cars on the road.

Two victims died after the collision

The pickup driver, Jonathan Couch, 54, of Sugar Grove, was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and died the next morning, prosecutors said.

His passenger, Teresa Haidl, 56, of Batavia, suffered life-threatening injuries and died two days after the crash at a hospital. Passengers in the other two vehicles had minor injuries, according to prosecutors.

Blood alcohol level and evidence found in the car

After the crash, Hill was taken to a hospital, where blood was drawn as part of her medical treatment. Her blood alcohol concentration was later recorded at 0.236, which is nearly three times Illinois’ legal limit for driving.

Responding officers also reported finding a partially consumed bottle of wine on the passenger-side floorboard of Hill’s vehicle. Police said very loud music was playing through the car’s audio system when they arrived.

What the sentence means under Illinois law

Under Illinois law, Hill must serve at least 85% of the eight-year sentence. She also received credit for one day already served in the Kane County Jail.

Prosecutors said the possible penalty range was wide. The maximum sentence could have been 28 years in prison, while the minimum was six years in prison or probation. Prosecutors had asked the court for an 18-year sentence.

Court reaction and the families left behind

Assistant State’s Attorney Katy Flannagan said no sentence could make up for the losses of Couch and Haidl, but she thanked the victims’ families for staying with the case through the court process.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office provided the information in the case, along with previous Fox Chicago reporting. The sentencing closes one chapter in a crash that left a lasting mark on two nearby communities and the families connected to the victims.
