KNOXVILLE, IL — Two motorcycle riders died early Sunday after a wrong-way collision on Interstate 74 in Knox County, and Illinois State Police later arrested a 19-year-old Monmouth man in connection with the crash. Investigators said the crash happened near U.S. 150 in Knoxville when a Chevrolet Malibu entered the westbound lanes traveling eastbound and struck the motorcycle.
The Knox County Coroner identified the victims as Curtis Vannier of Moline and Kelsey Barksdale of Davenport, Iowa. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the driver of the Malibu, Brian Boyer, was taken to a hospital after the wreck and later placed in custody once he was released.
How the crash unfolded on Interstate 74
Illinois State Police Troop 4 said troopers were called to the scene at about 2:10 a.m. on Aug. 30, 2026. The collision happened on I-74 westbound near U.S. 150 in Knoxville, where the Malibu was reported to be driving the wrong way in lanes intended for westbound traffic.
According to state police, the motorcycle was traveling westbound when it was hit. The force of the crash killed both people on the bike at the scene. Boyer, who was driving the car, suffered injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The location is a busy stretch of interstate that connects travelers moving through Knox County, and the wreck quickly became a fatal scene response for troopers and emergency crews. Police have not released additional details about what led the Malibu into the wrong-way lane.
Victims identified by the Knox County Coroner
On Monday, the Knox County Coroner named the two people killed in the crash. Curtis Vannier lived in Moline, and Kelsey Barksdale lived in Davenport, Iowa. Their identities had not been publicly released in the immediate aftermath of the collision.
The coroner said both victims died from injuries suffered in the weekend wreck. State police and the coroner’s office have not said whether the motorcycle riders were related or what kind of trip they were making before the crash.
The deaths add to a tragic holiday-weekend stretch on the roads and underscore how quickly a wrong-way driver can turn a routine trip into a fatal collision. Officials have not announced any memorial information or other public arrangements for the victims.
Charges approved after Boyer left the hospital
Illinois State Police said the case was presented to the Knox County State’s Attorney’s Office on Aug. 31, one day after the crash. Prosecutors approved two counts of reckless homicide, which are Class 3 felonies, and two counts of aggravated driving under the influence involving death, which are Class 2 felonies.
Boyer, identified by police as a Monmouth resident, was released from the hospital and taken into custody while waiting for his first court appearance. The arrest came after investigators completed their initial review of the fatal collision and moved the case to prosecutors.
State police described the charges as the result of the deadly wrong-way crash, but the filing of charges is not a finding of guilt. The case now moves into the court process, where the allegations will be tested before a judge.
What police have said about the vehicles involved
State police identified the car as a Chevrolet Malibu and said it was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes before the collision. The motorcycle was heading westbound on I-74 when the two vehicles met near U.S. 150.
Wrong-way crashes are often especially dangerous because drivers and riders have little time to react once a vehicle is headed in the wrong direction. In this case, police said the motorcycle occupants died at the scene, while the car’s driver survived long enough to receive hospital treatment.

Boyer is being held pending his first court appearance, according to Illinois State Police. Because the case has only reached the charging stage, prosecutors will still need to present evidence if the matter proceeds through the Knox County court system.
