DC Officer Dies After Shooting Inside Second District Station in Northwest Washington as Police Say No One Else Appears Involved

WASHINGTON, DC — A Metropolitan Police Department officer died after being shot inside the Second District station in Northwest Washington early Monday, according to D.C. police.

Police said the officer was critically wounded inside the building in the 3300 block of Idaho Avenue NW and was taken to a hospital, where the officer later died. The department has not released the officer’s name.

Investigators with MPD’s internal affairs unit responded to the station and began looking into what happened. Police said their early findings did not show that another person was involved in the officer’s injuries.

Inside the Station

The shooting happened at the Second District station, one of the department’s neighborhood facilities in Northwest Washington. The exact circumstances inside the station have not been publicly explained, and police have not said how the shot was fired or what led up to the injury.

The location places the incident in a busy part of the city near Idaho Avenue NW. Even with that setting, police have so far emphasized that the wounded officer was inside the station when the critical injury occurred.

Because the investigation is still active, officials have released only limited details. No additional injuries were reported in connection with the shooting, and police have not announced any arrests or suspects.

Police Response

MPD said its internal affairs division handled the initial review after the shooting. That unit typically looks into serious incidents involving officers, and in this case it was sent to examine the circumstances around the death.

Authorities have not described any outside threat or confrontation at the station. Instead, they said nothing so far points to another person being responsible for the officer’s injuries.

Police also have not said whether the station was placed under any special restriction after the shooting. The department has not provided a timeline for when more information may be released.

Bowser's Message

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser did not directly address the shooting in her public post, but she used social media to urge people who are struggling emotionally to ask for help.

She wrote, “Let’s look out for each other,” and included the suicide-prevention hotline number. Her message came as the city was absorbing news of the officer’s death and the investigation was still unfolding.

Support resources were also shared with the public, including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. People can call or text 988, or visit 988lifeline.org for live chat support and additional help.

What Happens Next

The death of a police officer inside a station is likely to draw close scrutiny inside the department, but officials have not yet outlined the next steps in the inquiry. For now, the facts released publicly are limited to the location, the timing, and the officer’s death after hospital treatment.

Police have not said what sparked the shooting or whether any equipment, witness statements, or video evidence is part of the review. They also have not identified the officer or said whether family members have been notified.

NBC Washington said it would continue following the developing story. Until police release more, the basic account remains the same: an MPD officer was critically injured inside the Second District station and later died.
