Deadly Haverford Township Crash Leaves One Man Dead, Eight Hurt After Revoked License for Medical Reasons Raised Questions About Penndot Oversight

HAVERFORD TWP., PA — A violent crash in Haverford Township killed 57-year-old John Ryan, injured eight other people and damaged 16 vehicles after Ryan’s pickup truck slammed into stopped traffic on Saturday.

Police said the wreck stretched more than a mile and ended when the truck struck a U-Haul, flipped onto its side and came to rest after a chain of impacts captured on surveillance video.

The crash is now drawing attention because authorities said Ryan had already lost his driving privileges for medical reasons before getting behind the wheel.

Video shows the final seconds of the wreck

Surveillance footage recorded the most violent part of the crash, showing Ryan’s pickup crashing into stopped vehicles before tipping onto its side and hitting the U-Haul.

The images underscore how quickly the wreck unfolded across the township roadway. Police have said Ryan experienced a medical emergency before the crash, but they have not identified the condition involved.

The scale of the damage suggests the impact reached multiple drivers and passengers over a broad stretch of roadway. That has made the crash a focus not only for investigators but also for people trying to understand how a driver with a revoked license was on the road.

PennDOT medical recalls can take a driver off the road

Attorney Ramsey Chew, who handles auto accident cases with Wapner Newman, said a medical recall of driving privileges means a person is no longer legally allowed to drive unless PennDOT restores that privilege.

Chew said the restriction is meant to protect the public, because a driver with an unsafe medical condition can put passengers, pedestrians and other motorists at risk on any public roadway.

He said the rule is not a warning or a suggestion. It is a legal prohibition until the state clears the driver to return to the road.

Doctors, family members and police can alert the state

PennDOT said medical providers are required by law to report concerns about a person’s ability to drive safely. Family members, friends and law enforcement can also submit those concerns.

After a report is filed, PennDOT can clear the driver, ask for more medical information or recall the driver’s license after review by its medical unit.

That process is designed to respond to conditions that may interfere with safe driving, including epilepsy and other medical issues recognized under Pennsylvania rules. PennDOT also said drivers have the right to challenge a recall decision.

Legal consequences may extend beyond the crash itself

Chew said a driver who continues to drive after privileges have been withdrawn can face additional legal consequences. He also said the families and injured people involved in the Haverford Township crash may have options in civil court.

“There are many different avenues of justice for the families and individuals that were injured in this accident,” Chew said, pointing specifically to the civil system.

The crash has already created that kind of legal and practical fallout, with questions focused on whether the driver should have been on the road at all and what responsibilities apply when a medical recall has been issued.

PennDOT would not say when Ryan lost driving privileges

PennDOT said it could not disclose when Ryan’s privileges were suspended because of privacy restrictions. That leaves part of the timeline unresolved as investigators and others examine the circumstances around the wreck.

Police have said Ryan suffered a medical emergency before the crash, but they have not released the medical condition that led to the recall. The agency’s privacy rules also limit what it can say about an individual case.

For now, the crash remains a stark example of how a medical issue behind the wheel can trigger a deadly chain reaction across a crowded roadway. The damage, injuries and unanswered questions have kept the incident under close scrutiny in Delaware County.
