DRAPER, UT — A motorcyclist died Saturday after a crash on northbound Interstate 15 in Draper, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the wreck happened around 1:21 p.m. near 10800 South when traffic slowed and the motorcycle behind a black Dodge Journey skidded into the SUV. The bike then hit the rear of a Ford F-350.
The rider, identified only as a man, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Nobody in the other vehicles was hurt.
Traffic slowed near 10800 South before the motorcycle skidded
Investigators said the Dodge Journey was moving north on I-15 when it slowed because of traffic. The motorcycle was traveling directly behind it, leaving little room when conditions changed in the lane ahead.
After skidding, the bike struck the Dodge and then collided with the Ford pickup. Utah Highway Patrol did not say whether the motorcycle or the vehicles involved had any mechanical issues.
The sequence matters because it shows how quickly congestion can turn dangerous on a high-speed interstate. The crash happened in daylight on a busy corridor through the south Salt Lake Valley.
The rider died after reaching the hospital
Authorities said the motorcyclist was taken to a hospital after the crash, but emergency care was not enough to save him. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Officials have not released his name. They also have not said whether any additional medical examiner findings will be made public later.
The other drivers and passengers were checked after the collision and were not injured, according to the Utah Highway Patrol release. No other injuries were reported at the scene.
Right three lanes closed for hours during the investigation
The wreck forced closure of the right three lanes of northbound I-15 as troopers worked the scene. The Utah Highway Patrol said those lanes were expected to stay shut for several hours.
That kind of lane restriction can create significant backup on one of Utah’s main north-south travel routes. Drivers in the area were left to navigate around the closure while investigators documented the crash.
The highway patrol said the incident remained under investigation. Officials did not immediately give a timeline for reopening all lanes.
Draper crash corrected after an earlier location error
The crash location was later corrected to Draper. An earlier version had placed the wreck in Sandy, but officials clarified that it happened in Draper instead.
That distinction matters because the collision occurred near 10800 South, a stretch of I-15 that runs through Draper rather than Sandy. Accurate location details are important in crash reports, especially when lanes stay closed for hours.
Contributing reporting came from Alex Tumalip. Utah Highway Patrol did not announce any citations or other enforcement action in connection with the crash.
Motorcycle crashes on fast-moving interstate traffic can turn deadly quickly
This crash adds to the long list of serious motorcycle collisions that can happen when traffic slows suddenly on a freeway. A rider has far less protection than drivers inside enclosed vehicles, and even a brief loss of control can lead to catastrophic injuries.
In this case, the motorcycle first hit an SUV and then the rear of a pickup truck, showing how one moment of braking can trigger a chain reaction. Utah Highway Patrol has not said whether weather, speed, or road conditions played any role.
For drivers, the incident is a reminder to leave more following distance on major highways and to expect stop-and-go traffic even on routes that normally move quickly.
