ROSENBERG, TX — A 60-year-old Mississippi man is accused of intentionally driving his Chevrolet HHR through the front doors of a Kroger in Rosenberg early Sunday, then telling police he was desperate to use the restroom. Investigators say James Mansell Lancaster Jr. of Natchez caused about $50,000 in damage when the store was closed just after 4:30 a.m.
Rosenberg police said Lancaster drove a gray 2006 Chevrolet HHR past shelves and into the supermarket before the vehicle came to rest near Halloween candy. No one was injured or killed in the crash, and Lancaster remained at the scene long enough to be arrested.
Police say the vehicle went through the front entrance and stopped inside the store
Investigators released photographs showing the compact SUV inside the grocery store after it accelerated through the entrance. The vehicle pushed past displays that included pumpkin spice Cheerios and Special K cereal boxes before stopping near a Halloween candy display, according to the images described by police.
The car also passed beneath a sign over the doorway that read, “Thanks for shopping, y’all!” That detail underscored how little time the vehicle spent outside the store after the impact, and how quickly the crash turned an ordinary grocery entrance into a damaged interior scene.
Police have not said that anyone else was involved. The crash happened in the early morning hours, well before the Kroger was open for business.
Lancaster faces a third-degree felony criminal mischief charge
Authorities charged Lancaster with criminal mischief causing more than $30,000 and less than $150,000 in property damage, which is a third-degree felony under Texas law. The damage estimate given by police was about $50,000, placing the case squarely within that charge range.
According to the Fort Bend County Jail inmate roster, a judge set bail at $50,000. Lancaster had not bonded out as of the latest booking information, and it was not clear whether he had hired a lawyer.
Police did not describe any additional charges. For now, the case centers on the alleged decision to use a vehicle to enter the store rather than any broader criminal episode.
The restroom explanation came directly from Lancaster, police say
A Rosenberg police spokesperson said Lancaster told officers the doors were locked and he needed to use the restroom. That statement has become the only explanation police publicly attributed to him for the crash.
Officials did not say whether Lancaster made any other comments about his motive. They also did not indicate that they had identified a separate cause for the wreck beyond his own account to officers at the scene.
That leaves the case with a blunt factual record and little elaboration: a closed grocery store, a vehicle through the entrance, and a suspect saying he needed a bathroom when he drove in.
Kroger said associate and customer safety remains a core value
A Kroger spokesperson also responded to the crash, saying the safety of associates and customers is one of the company’s core values. The company did not publicly detail repairs, staffing changes, or how long the Rosenberg store would need to recover from the damage.
The most visible harm appears to have been to the front entrance and doors, which investigators said came apart cleanly enough that the rest of the building did not suffer major damage. That likely limits the scope of repairs, even if the replacement costs are still significant.
For employees, the incident added an unusual overnight disruption to a place built around routine traffic, carts, and checkout lanes rather than a vehicle forced through the entrance.
