JASPER COUNTY, TX — Texas Department of Public Safety troopers have identified the driver killed in a Jasper County UTV crash as 23-year-old Dylan Lind of Vidor.
Investigators say Lind was driving a Polaris utility vehicle Friday night when it overturned in a ditch near FM 1131 and County Road 878, about eight miles south of Evadale. He died at the scene.
The crash happened around 8 p.m. as the vehicle traveled north in the east barrow ditch. DPS said Lind lost control, entered a side skid and overturned.
A justice of the peace was called and ordered an autopsy.
Crash happened in a ditch near FM 1131 south of Evadale
Troopers said the Polaris UTV was moving north in the east barrow ditch when the driver lost control. The vehicle then went into a side skid before turning over.
The location places the wreck near County Road 878, a rural stretch of roadway in Jasper County. DPS described the crash site as roughly eight miles south of Evadale.
That part of the county can involve narrow shoulders and ditch lines beside the roadway, which is where troopers say the UTV was operating when the rollover occurred. Officials have not said whether any other vehicles were involved.
Deputy first on scene as officials secured the area
A Jasper County sheriff’s deputy was the first responder at the crash, according to Sheriff Chuck Havard.
The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office stayed on scene while the investigation was underway. The agencies have not released further details about what led to the loss of control.
Because the crash happened late Friday evening, investigators worked after dark at the rural scene. DPS has not said whether weather, road conditions or speed played a role.
Lind died at the scene after the rollover
Officials said Lind was pronounced dead where the UTV came to rest. No emergency transport was reported from the scene.
A justice of the peace was notified and ordered an autopsy, a routine step in fatal crash investigations. That examination could help confirm the cause and manner of death.
Lind was from Vidor, in southeast Texas, and was 23 years old. DPS identified him after the crash investigation began.
Jasper County investigators have not released a cause
The crash remains under investigation by DPS and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. For now, officials have only described the sequence of events that led to the rollover.
They said the UTV was in a ditch, lost control, skidded and overturned. No additional information has been released about mechanical problems, driver actions or other conditions that may have contributed.
More details could come from the autopsy or from the continuing crash investigation, but officials have not set a timetable for any further findings.
Rural UTV crashes can be especially dangerous
Utility terrain vehicles are often used in off-road work and recreation, but rollovers can be deadly when a driver loses traction in a ditch or along a roadside slope.
In this case, the crash happened on a rural county road corridor where a vehicle traveling in a ditch can shift quickly and overturn. DPS said the Polaris was in the east barrow ditch when the wreck occurred.
With investigators still reviewing the scene, the case stands as another reminder of how quickly a UTV crash can turn fatal, even at a relatively low-sounding roadside location.
