Juvenile Pedestrian Dies After Indianola Crash on West 18th Place as Police Hand Investigation to Iowa State Patrol

INDIANOLA, IA — A juvenile pedestrian died Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle in Indianola, according to police. Officers and emergency crews were called shortly before 6 p.m. to the 400 block of West 18th Place after reports of a vehicle-pedestrian crash.

Police said bystanders were already trying to help the pedestrian when officers arrived. Responding officers took over CPR, and crews requested a LifeFlight helicopter because of the severity of the injuries. Despite those efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Bystanders started CPR before officers arrived

Indianola police said the response moved quickly once crews reached the scene. The initial call brought officers and emergency personnel to West 18th Place shortly before 6 p.m., where they found a serious crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle.

Bystanders had already stepped in to help the injured pedestrian before police took over lifesaving measures. Officers continued CPR at the scene, and the request for a LifeFlight helicopter shows how serious responders believed the injuries were. Even with that response, the juvenile could not be saved.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office later pronounced the pedestrian dead at the crash scene. Police have not released any information about the exact sequence of the crash or what led up to the impact.

The driver was also a juvenile

Police said the driver involved in the crash was also a juvenile. Because of the ages involved, authorities are withholding the identities of both young people. Police also said they are keeping those names private out of respect for the families.

That decision leaves many of the basic personal details off the public record for now, including who was driving and who was walking at the time of the crash. Police have not said whether the vehicle stayed at the scene in a way that led to any charges or citations.

For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the time, place and outcome of the wreck: a child or teenager died after a vehicle-pedestrian collision in a residential part of Indianola.

Iowa State Patrol now leads the investigation

The Iowa State Patrol has taken over the investigation from Indianola police. That shift means state authorities will now examine the crash details, the scene evidence and any findings that could help explain how the collision happened.

Police have not said what caused the crash, whether speed or visibility played a role, or whether investigators have determined the vehicle’s direction of travel. No additional information has been released about the street conditions or whether the area had other traffic at the time.

With the case now in state hands, any new facts are likely to come from the Iowa State Patrol or from local officials as the investigation continues.

West 18th Place is a residential stretch near homes and local traffic

The crash happened in the 400 block of West 18th Place, a location that suggests a neighborhood setting rather than a major highway or commercial corridor. Police did not describe the exact block in more detail, but the address places the collision in a residential area of Indianola.

That kind of setting can matter in a pedestrian crash because vehicles, walkers and nearby driveways often share the same space. Even so, police have not said whether the pedestrian was crossing the street, standing in the roadway or traveling alongside it when the vehicle struck them.

Officials have also not said whether lighting, weather or visibility were factors. Those details remain part of the broader investigation.

What police have said and what remains unknown

The public statement from police is brief, but it confirms several key points. A juvenile pedestrian died after a crash Sunday evening. The driver was also a juvenile. Emergency crews responded, CPR was performed, and a helicopter was requested before the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Beyond that, much of the case remains undisclosed. Authorities have not released the names of either juvenile, have not described the injuries in detail and have not said whether any citations or charges are expected. Police have also not explained how the crash unfolded or whether witnesses saw the collision happen.

For Indianola residents, the incident is another reminder of how quickly a neighborhood traffic crash can turn fatal. Investigators will now work to piece together exactly what happened on West 18th Place Sunday evening.

Local news that matters, from Dulaney Griffin.
