Northbound I-15 Closed Near Woods Cross After Fatal Crash Involving Speeding Sedan and Semi Truck, With One Death and Another Minor Injury

WOODS CROSS, UT — Northbound Interstate 15 was shut down near Woods Cross on Saturday morning after a fatal crash that left one person dead and another with minor injuries. Utah Department of Transportation officials said the closure began at 2600 South, forcing drivers off the freeway and slowing traffic in the area.

UDOT told motorists to exit at 2600 South and reenter I-15 at 500 South. The agency also pointed drivers to I-215 West and Legacy Highway as an alternate route while the scene remained closed and investigators worked at the crash site.

UDOT rerouted drivers away from 2600 South

In an alert posted to social media, UDOT warned that northbound I-15 was closed at 2600 South because of the crash. The agency’s message gave travelers a clear detour: leave the freeway at 2600 South, then get back on at 500 South.

That kind of closure can create a ripple effect for anyone heading through Davis County, especially on a busy weekend morning. UDOT also suggested using I-215 West to Legacy Highway as another way around the blockage.

The freeway shutdown was still in place as officials continued responding to the wreck. No timeline was immediately given for reopening the interstate.

High-speed sedan hit the back of a semi truck

Utah Highway Patrol told FOX 13 News that the crash started when a silver sedan was traveling north at a high rate of speed. Investigators said the sedan struck the rear of a semi truck, setting off a chain reaction on the highway.

After the impact, the semi truck lost control and then struck three other vehicles. The sequence turned a single collision into a multi-vehicle crash, leaving debris and damage across the northbound lanes.

Officials have not released further details about why the sedan was moving so fast or what led up to the impact. The crash remains under investigation.

One person died and another was hurt

Authorities confirmed that one person died in the crash. Another person was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. No additional information about the victims was released Saturday.

Because the wreck involved several vehicles, responders had to deal with both the collision scene and the traffic backup it created. The serious outcome is one reason the freeway stayed closed while officials worked through the aftermath.

Utah Highway Patrol did not immediately say whether more people were checked at the scene or whether any of the other drivers were injured. The agency has not yet released names.

Alternate routes and traffic impact in Davis County

For drivers in and around Woods Cross, the closure meant a major disruption along one of the region’s main north-south corridors. UDOT’s detour pushed traffic off I-15 at 2600 South, then back onto the freeway at 500 South, with an additional option of I-215 West to Legacy Highway.

Those routes are designed to keep traffic moving while emergency crews and investigators clear the scene. Even so, a fatal crash on an interstate can back up nearby roads quickly, especially when a stretch of freeway is completely blocked.

Motorists heading through the area were urged to plan for delays and use the alternate routes until the highway reopened.

Crash remains under investigation by Utah Highway Patrol

The crash happened Saturday morning and was still developing as of the latest update from FOX 13 News. UDOT and Utah Highway Patrol were both involved in relaying information about the closure and the circumstances of the wreck.

Investigators have not said whether impairment, distraction, or other factors played a role. They also have not released a more detailed timeline for the collision or the recovery effort.

For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the fatality, the minor injury, the vehicles involved, and the closure that followed. Additional updates are expected as Utah Highway Patrol continues its investigation.
