Driver Killed in Multivehicle I-15 Crash Near Woods Cross After Speeding Sedan Hit Semitruck and Sent Traffic Into Four More Vehicles Saturday Morning

WOODS CROSS, UT — A person was killed Saturday morning in a multivehicle crash on northbound I-15 near Woods Cross after a silver sedan hit the back of a semitruck at a high rate of speed, according to the Utah Department of Transportation and Utah Highway Patrol.

Trooper Davies Sanchez said the impact caused the semitruck driver to lose control, and the truck then struck three other vehicles. Another person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Officials had not released the names of those involved.

Speed and impact set off the chain reaction

Sanchez said the silver sedan was traveling north quickly when it collided with the semitruck from behind. That initial strike triggered the rest of the wreck, turning one rear-end crash into a larger pileup involving multiple vehicles.

The sedan driver died in the crash. The description from highway patrol points to the force of the collision as a major factor in what happened next, with the semitruck losing control before it hit three additional vehicles.

Authorities have not said whether weather, road conditions or impairment played any role. The crash details released so far focus on speed and the sequence of impacts rather than on any single cause beyond the first collision.

One death and one hospital trip after the pileup

At least two people were hurt in the crash, though the injuries were not equally severe. The driver of the silver sedan was killed, while another person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, Sanchez said.

No additional injury count was released, and officials did not say whether any of the other vehicles carried passengers. The limited casualty information suggests investigators were still sorting out the full scene as traffic crews and troopers worked through the aftermath.

For motorists passing through the area, the first concern was the size of the crash zone and how long it would take to clear. For investigators, the immediate task was documenting the vehicles, the point of impact and the movements that followed.

Northbound I-15 closed before sunrise and reopened before noon

Northbound I-15 was shut down at 2600 South at 7:33 a.m. while investigators examined the scene. The closure forced traffic away from a major commuter route through northern Utah during the morning hours.

The highway reopened shortly before noon, but the Utah Department of Transportation said heavy residual congestion remained after the closure ended. That kind of backup can linger even after lanes reopen, especially on a busy interstate where traffic has been stopped for hours.

The shutdown location near Woods Cross placed the crash on a stretch of roadway that serves both local drivers and travelers moving through the Wasatch Front corridor. Crews cleared the wreck while officials gathered information for the investigation.

Utah Highway Patrol is still examining what led to the crash

Troopers have not yet announced a full determination of what caused the collision. The information released so far identifies the speeding sedan and the chain reaction that followed, but not every factor behind it.

Officials said the scene was under investigation Saturday morning, and the story remained active as more details were expected. That means additional facts could emerge about the vehicles, the driver behavior, and the sequence of impacts.

For now, the confirmed details are limited but clear: a high-speed rear-end collision on I-15 near Woods Cross left one person dead, sent another to the hospital, and snarled traffic for much of the morning.

What drivers in the area needed to know Saturday

The crash affected a major northbound route through Davis County, and delays stretched beyond the time the freeway reopened. Drivers heading through the area had to contend with backups left behind by the closure and the investigation.

Transportation officials said congestion was still heavy after lanes reopened, a sign that the delay had not disappeared with the end of the closure. In busy morning traffic, those lingering backups can affect nearby exits and connecting roads as vehicles funnel back onto the interstate.

Emergency responders, highway patrol and transportation crews all played a role in the response, from documenting the scene to restoring traffic flow. The immediate focus remained on safety, clearing the roadway and determining exactly how the fatal crash unfolded.
