LEXINGTON, KY — A Versailles woman died Thursday morning after her SUV struck the rear of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 64 west in Woodford County, according to Kentucky State Police.
Troopers said the crash happened near the 61-mile marker around 9:45 a.m. and left 36-year-old Christine Wilson dead at the scene. KSP Post 12 in Frankfort is investigating the wreck, which happened in the westbound lanes as traffic had already slowed.
State police said heavy congestion and a construction zone ahead contributed to the slowdown before the collision.
Troopers say westbound traffic had slowed before the impact
Investigators said Wilson was driving a white GMC SUV in the right westbound lane when it ran into the back of the semi.
The collision happened in a stretch of Interstate 64 where traffic had backed up because of the construction zone ahead. KSP has not said whether any other vehicles were involved or whether weather played any role.
Rear-end crashes in slow traffic can become especially severe when larger commercial vehicles are involved, and this wreck turned fatal even though it occurred on a busy travel route in broad daylight.
Christine Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene
Wilson, 36, was from Versailles. Kentucky State Police said she was pronounced dead where the wreck occurred.
No additional details about her travel plans or where she was headed were included in the initial statement from troopers. The agency has not released further information about possible passengers or whether anyone else in the SUV was hurt.
The fatality adds to the short list of work zone and traffic-slowdown crashes that can quickly turn deadly when speed differences shrink and drivers have little room to react.
Semi driver James Calvin was hurt but not critically
The tractor-trailer driver was identified as 47-year-old James Calvin of Wentzville, Missouri. State police said he did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Calvin’s condition was not described in detail beyond that initial injury update. Troopers did not say whether he was treated at the scene or taken to a hospital.
Even in crashes where the commercial driver survives with relatively minor injuries, investigators still have to sort out how traffic conditions, lane position and stopping distance came together in the seconds before impact.
Both westbound lanes reopened after the crash scene was cleared
Emergency crews closed both westbound lanes while investigators processed the scene. That closure was temporary, and the lanes have since reopened.
The crash site near the 61-mile marker sits on a busy stretch of interstate where construction can cause sudden slowdowns. Police did not immediately announce any citations or charges tied to the wreck.
KSP said the investigation remains ongoing as troopers continue to review what happened before the SUV struck the tractor-trailer.
