Florence Police Say 75-Year-Old Mayra Ruiz Was Killed in a Head-On Crash on Houston Road Near Marydale Road Overnight Sunday

FLORENCE, KY — Florence police say a 75-year-old woman died after a head-on crash overnight on Houston Road. Officers were called to the scene around 12:32 a.m. Sunday near the intersection with Marydale Road.

When police arrived, they found that one of the drivers, identified as Mayra Ruiz of Florence, had been killed. The other driver was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center with injuries police described as non-life-threatening.

Police identified the victim as Mayra Ruiz of Florence

The Florence Police Department said Ruiz was driving southbound when the collision happened. The other vehicle was traveling northbound at the time of impact.

Police have not said which driver crossed into the opposite lane or what led to the vehicles colliding. The crash happened on a stretch of Houston Road that sits near Marydale Road, a busy area in Florence where traffic can move quickly even late at night.

The other driver was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center

Authorities said the second driver survived the wreck and was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Police said those injuries were not considered life-threatening.

No additional details about that driver’s identity or condition have been released. Police also have not said whether any other passengers were involved in the crash.

Investigators have not said what caused the collision

The exact cause of the head-on crash remains under investigation. Police said the circumstances that led to the vehicles striking each other are still unclear.

Head-on collisions can be especially dangerous because the force of impact is concentrated in a direct strike between vehicles. In this case, investigators are still working to determine how the two cars ended up on a collision course along Houston Road.

Florence police are asking witnesses to contact accident reconstruction officers

The Florence Police Department said its Accident Reconstruction Team is handling the investigation. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call 859-647-5420.

That request suggests investigators are looking for witness accounts or other details that could help clarify the sequence of events before the fatal impact. For now, police have only confirmed the time, location, direction of travel and the fatality.

Weekend crash adds another deadly moment on a busy Northern Kentucky road

The fatal wreck occurred shortly after midnight on a roadway that connects drivers through a busy part of Florence. The timing, just after the start of Sunday, means investigators are trying to piece together what happened in the dark hours when traffic is usually lighter.

Ruiz’s death leaves one driver dead and another hospitalized after the collision. Police have not announced whether charges, citations or further findings are expected once the reconstruction work is finished.
