Wrong-Way Crash Near Eufaula Lake on U.S. Highway 69 Kills Two Oklahoma Drivers, Including 75-Year-Old Sandra Burton and 62-Year-Old Albert Oosterloo

EUFAULA, OK — Two drivers were killed Sunday evening in a wrong-way crash near Eufaula Lake, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The collision happened around 7 p.m. on U.S. Highway 69 when a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes hit another vehicle that was heading north in the correct direction. OHP said both drivers died at the scene.

The fatal wreck shut down any hope of a simple evening drive for the people involved and added another deadly example of the dangers posed by wrong-way driving on a major highway.

OHP says one vehicle entered the northbound lanes

Investigators said the crash began when one vehicle was moving the wrong direction on U.S. Highway 69 near Eufaula Lake. It was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it struck a second vehicle that was driving north in the northbound lanes.

The highway patrol did not say why the first vehicle was in the wrong lanes. No additional details were released about the sequence of impact, and authorities have not described any other contributing factors.

The location puts the crash on a busy corridor that cuts through southeastern Oklahoma near Eufaula Lake, where drivers can face long stretches of highway traffic with limited margin for error.

Victims identified as Sandra Burton and Albert Oosterloo

OHP identified the driver of the wrong-way vehicle as 75-year-old Sandra Burton of Eufaula. The driver of the other vehicle was identified as 62-year-old Albert Oosterloo of Broken Arrow.

Both drivers were the only people in their vehicles. No passengers were reported, which means the crash involved just the two drivers and no one else inside either car.

The patrol’s identification gives the wreck a personal toll that extends beyond the roadway itself, affecting families in two Oklahoma communities.

Seat belts were in use, but the impact was still fatal

According to OHP, both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. Even with restraints in place, the force of the wrong-way impact was enough to kill both motorists.

That detail underscores how severe the crash was. Seat belts can reduce injuries in many wrecks, but they cannot always prevent deadly outcomes when a high-speed head-on collision occurs.

The highway patrol did not release information about the vehicles involved beyond the basic crash description, and it has not said whether speed played any role.

A deadly stretch of highway near the lake

U.S. Highway 69 is a major route through eastern Oklahoma, and the section near Eufaula Lake serves as a connection point for local traffic and longer-distance travel. Crashes there can happen quickly, especially when a driver ends up in the wrong lane.

This latest wreck is part of a broader reminder that wrong-way collisions are among the most dangerous roadway incidents because they often leave drivers with almost no time to react.

OHP has not announced any further public safety changes tied to the crash, and it has not said whether additional investigation steps are planned.

What investigators have not said yet

The highway patrol has not explained what caused the wrong-way entry onto the highway or whether impairment, distraction or another factor may have been involved. No citation, arrest or criminal allegation was included in the information released about the crash.

Authorities also did not provide a timeline for any more findings. For now, the official account is limited to the time, place, vehicles, identities of the drivers and the fatal outcome.

Those details leave the central facts clear: two Oklahoma drivers died after a wrong-way collision on U.S. Highway 69 near Eufaula Lake Sunday evening.
